Milton's regular "Ask the Equestrian" returns with more pertinent insights to educate our community about all things horses. If you have a horse-related question, email it to [email protected] and we'll do our best to answer it online.

QUESTION: Why are fireworks and other loud, sudden noises particularly dangerous to horses?

ANSWER: Horses generally are “flight” (rather than “fight”) animals. So when they perceive danger such as from an unexpected boom like a firework, a horse’s natural tendency is to bolt or generally react more wildly. And because of their herd instincts (in which they tend to gather together with safety in numbers), if one horse gets upset it can set off a chain reaction with other horses in the vicinity having a similar reaction. When they do, horses could seriously harm themselves (such as by running into things), nearby property, as well as any people or other animals near what can quickly escalate to become a scary situation. They might also escape into surrounding areas beyond their home, which poses a whole new set of issues and potential hazards.

This is something to keep in mind over the summer, when people generally are more likely to use fireworks. A reminder that the loud noises caused by fireworks are prohibited within Milton except for a handful of days. The next allowed times are between 10 a.m. and midnight on July 3 and July 4. Having set allowed times helps people prepare themselves and their animals, as some people (like veterans with PTSD) and household pets like dogs are extremely sensitive to blasting fireworks. Horses are important to our city’s rural heritage, so we appreciate people’s consideration of them this season and, really, all seasons.

Barns are fundamental to the fabric of Milton, both for farm owners and the city as a whole. That’s one of the reasons why keeping them safe from fire is so important.

To that end, Deputy Fire Marshal Andrew Kennedy will lead a Barn Fire Prevention Safety Seminar from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. This will take place at one of Milton’s picturesque horse farms – by a barn, naturally – at 1950 Bethany Way.

Anyone can attend this free educational event (which will include light snacks and refreshments), though they must RSVP first. To do so, please call Lori DePucci – a local realtor and the event’s sponsor – at 678-772-4373 or email her at [email protected].

Kennedy will touch on several topics including:
• What commonly causes barn fires and how to prevent them
• How animals such as horses behave in crises
• Developing safety plan should you barn catch fire
• The value of Community Connect, a Milton Fire-Rescue tool where you can let firefighters’ know critical details that can save time, property, and lives (for details, go to www.miltonga.gov/CommunityConnect)

This educational offering compliments the Barn Safety and Evaluation Program launched last year in conjunction with the Milton Equestrian Committee. People can set up an evaluation of their barn by emailing [email protected]. To learn more about this program, check out www.miltonga.gov/BarnSafety.

This is something that definitely needs to be brought to light!

This isn't a competition between trainers to best each other. If that is the way people see it we are taking away the importance of doing what is best for the horses as well as showing up coming riders how this world SHOULD be.

BY SARAH CARTER I have always known the horse world is competitive. Personally, I’m competitive with myself but appreciate the successes of my colleagues. As a member of the middle class, I recognize that getting anywhere in the horse world is hard and requires a ton of work. I’m a new farm and ...
