Step one to teaching your dog to “leave-it”!
Hey everyone it’s Stacey from petco Dog Training and today I made a little video on the first steps to teaching your dog “leave-it”. In the video I give a demonstration on how to begin the first step, which is getting your dog accustomed to understand what it is we are asking of them. All I want is Odin to stop sniffing the food and leave it alone on his own. I then marked the behavior with a “Yes” and he was rewarded. The reason why I gave treats from the other hand is because “leave-it” means they will NEVER get it. I don’t say the cue just yet because he doesn’t know what I want him to do yet. Tomorrow I will go over the next step and show you what you need to see before adding that step. Let me know if you have any questions! 🐾🐶
Teaching tour dog to come when outside 🐾
Hey everyone it’s Stacey from Petco dog training and one common question I get is how do I get a good recall when outside. Regardless if you have a fenced in yard or not I do recommend starting on leash so your dog can’t get too far and then too distracted. We set them up for success by keeping them close in the beginning. Here I have my own baby for this demonstration but it works on any dog, any breed, any age. Dogs are just like kids in the sense that if they aren’t looking at you they aren’t listening to you. First I use his name to gain his attention. Notice I only say it once because I want him to listen the first time I call him. I then use the noise to help gain his attention if he is sniffing something or heavily distracted. I then present the reward (treat, toy, attention, play, petting, etc.) as a way to lure him towards me. I start shuffling backwards to help get him moving a little faster and help keep his attention on me until he reaches me. I mark the instant he got to me with the marker word, Yes, which lets him know he did it correctly. He then got his reward. I threw another treat back towards the area he was sniffing to release him with an Okay. When calling your dog make sure it’s not always to go in the kennel, fun is over, dog park is over, etc. Recall doesn’t always have to mean good things end, so I recommend practicing randomly throughout the day. This training exercise is both fun and safe for everyone and you can make a game out of it with kids as well. Feel free to call the store or leave a message if you need any help! 🐾🐶
