Would you know if your cat was in pain? Cats will often hide the fact that they are in pain, and they are often more difficult to read than dogs. Our feline family members will show us how they feel through behavior changes.

Signs of Pain in Cats:
✅ Reduced activity
✅ Loss of appetite
✅ Quiet/loss of curiosity
✅ Changes in urinary/defecation habits
✅ Hiding, hissing, spitting
✅ Lack of agility/jumping
✅ Excessive licking/grooming
✅ Stiff posture/gait
✅ Guarding behavior
✅ Lack of grooming/matted fur
✅ Tail flicking
✅ Weight loss

If your cat displays any of these symptoms, give Alpharetta Veterinary Specialty + Emergency a call at (770) 209-5355. We are located at 3100 Royal Blvd S, Alpharetta, GA, 30022!

During the winter months, cats will often seek out any warm space they can find. Unfortunately, common cozy places include underneath a car and a warm car engine which puts their lives at risk. Here’s a few actions you can take to avoid these types of catastrophes:

🐱 Keep your cat safe and warm inside
💭 Check on your cat before leaving the house or before leaving for a trip
🚗 Make loud warning sounds before starting your car
📢 Give cats time to escape your car after you’ve made the loud noises
🛌 Provide a safer, alternative cozy spot for cats by setting up a cat bed, box and blanket, or an old sweatshirt

If you have a cat emergency, contact Alpharetta Veterinary Specialty + Emergency at (770) 209-5355!

New Year’s Eve Pet Safety Tips – Celebrate Safely!

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in the New Year, let’s make sure our pets are safe and comfortable during the festivities. New Year’s Eve can be stressful for our pets, so here are a few tips to keep them happy while you celebrate:

🎆 Loud fireworks can be scary for pets. Keep them indoors in a safe, quiet space. Close windows, draw curtains, and consider playing soft music or white noise to help calm them.

🍹 Many party snacks and drinks are toxic to pets, including alcohol, chocolate, and anything containing grapes or raisins. Make sure guests know not to feed your pets!

🎉 Confetti, balloons, and party poppers can look like toys but may pose choking or ingestion hazards. Keep these out of reach.

🐕 If your pet gets anxious or tries to escape, ensure they’re wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags. Microchips are an added layer of security.

✨ Panting, pacing, hiding, or excessive barking could indicate your pet is feeling overwhelmed. Provide comfort and reassurance, and don’t hesitate to reach out if they need extra care.

Remember, emergencies don’t take holidays, and neither do we! The Alpharetta Veterinary Specialty + Emergency team is here for you on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If your pet needs care, you can count on us to help. Wishing you and your pets a happy, healthy, and safe start to 2025! 🎇🐾

Traveling with your pet this holiday season? Keep your furry companion safe and comfortable with these tips:

🚗 Secure your pet with a harness, carrier, or crate to prevent distractions while driving. Never let your pet sit on your lap while driving!

✈️ If traveling by plane, use an airline-approved carrier and make sure it’s well-ventilated. Label the carrier with your pet’s name, your contact info, and travel details. Ensure your pet’s vaccines and health certificates are up to date if traveling out of state or country.

💊 If your pet gets anxious or motion sick, consult your vet for advice or medications.

🎒 Bring food, water, medications, a leash, waste bags, and a familiar blanket or toy to keep your pet calm.

Remember, traveling can be stressful for pets. If your pet shows any signs of distress or becomes unwell during your trip, call Alpharetta Veterinary Specialty + Emergency at (770) 209-5355.

Safe travels and happy holidays from our team!

Please join us as we welcome our new Neurologist to the AVSE team! ✨

Dr. Brie Kopec is originally from New Jersey, but after completing her undergraduate studies at Cornell University, she took some time off and lived in Sydney, Australia for 3 years. After a great time down under, she decided to return to the US for vet school in 2016, and graduated from The Ohio State University in 2020. She then completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, followed by a neurology residency at the University of Georgia.

During her 3-year residency, she fell in love with Georgia and decided to move here permanently to relaunch a neurology service at AVSE. Interested in learning more about our neurology service? Visit our website here https://bit.ly/3ZfYrCM

Thanksgiving Foods: What's safe for your pets? 🦃

As we gather to celebrate with family and friends, it’s important to remember our furry companions. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate safe and unsafe foods for your pets this Thanksgiving!

Safe foods:
🍗 Plain turkey, no skin or seasoning
🍗 Plain canned pumpkin
🍗 Green beans
🍗 Carrots

Unsafe foods:
🍗 Turkey skin & ham
🍗 Onions & garlic
🍗 Gravy
🍗 Chocolate
🍗 Grapes & raisins

While it's tempting to share our Thanksgiving feast, it's best to stick to pet-friendly treats. If you're unsure about any foods, it's always safer to avoid it!

Common Thanksgiving Emergencies & How to Avoid Them

Thanksgiving is a time for celebration but it can also lead to unexpected pet emergencies. Here's what to keep an eye out for to ensure a safe holiday for your furry family members:

🔸 Table scraps: Many Thanksgiving foods (such as turkey skin, ham, and gravy), can be harmful to your pets. Rich, fatty foods can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
🔸 Chocolate and sweets: Chocolate is toxic to pets and any sweeteners using xylitol can be fatal.
🔸 Decorations and candles: Curious pets may knock over candles or chew on decorations, leading to burns or choking hazards.
🔸 Bones: Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious injuries to your pet's digestive tract.
