Why We Start Our Horses at Age 2

The decision to start our horses at age 2 wasn’t made lightly—it’s a very controversial topic, but this is why we chose this path. While there is nothing wrong with waiting until a horse is 4 or older, this is just what we believe is right for our program. Our approach is guided by research, practical experience, and a commitment to the long-term health and success of our horses. Studies, like the one published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, show that horses who begin their careers at age 2 often experience fewer injuries and enjoy longer careers compared to those started later.

As Carl A. Nafzger explains in Traits of a Winner: The Formula for Developing Thoroughbred Racehorses, early training is critical for shaping a horse’s mental and physical foundation. Nafzger highlights how starting young can build confidence, adaptability, and the traits needed for long-term success.

At 2 years old, a horse’s skeletal system is still maturing, and controlled training strengthens bones, tendons, and ligaments through natural adaptation. This approach helps prepare them for the physical demands of their careers while minimizing the risk of future injuries.

That’s why we entrusted our 2-year-old to trusted professional c**t starter Coleman Swanson of Swanson Horse Company, LLC, who ensures the horses are handled with care and precision. We’re also incredibly thankful for East River Equine, LLC, who provides X-rays and diagnostic work to ensure our mares are healthy, growing correctly, and have strong joints and tissue.

Additionally, we know that proper nutrition plays a vital role in their development, which is why we rely on a great feeding program with Tribute Equine Nutrition. Their high-quality, science-backed formulas provide the essential nutrients our horses need to grow strong, stay healthy, and perform at their best. While this may not be the path for everyone, we feel confident that starting our horses at 2—with thoughtful training, experienced care, close monitoring, and superior nutrition—is the best choice for our program. With the guidance of science, expert insights, and a dedicated team, we’re setting our horses up for long, healthy, and successful lives.

Beautiful day to put on some miles!

First picture is our 2 year old Karma Issa Kat who recently finished up 90 days - we really couldn’t be happier with her! From an untouched baby to a firm foundation 2 year old!

Second picture is our 24 year old - Rubys Last Chance - who acts like she’s 4. After a good few minutes in the round pen she was ready to head out!
