TOBY would like to thank everyone who came out today to support our sanctuary during these final days and, while doing so, got some great bargains. Being the greeter is a tiring job for a big boy. (And, NO, he is not for adoption. His mommy needs him a whole lot these days.)

We still have many bills to pay, including our vet. There are 3 dogs leaving that need to be fully vetted this coming week.

Please let everyone know that our sale continues tomorrow, 12-5p, and also next week.

Tomorrow, the first of our fencing will start coming down to be relocated to another developing rescue.

For 12 years, ARAS took in animals from all over the country with unspeakable physical ailments and behavioral issues. Some of the dogs were dangerous to my staff and me. I've been personally bitten severely, but never turned my back on anyone or euthanized because it was inconvenient. Some came from individuals, but most came from other rescues. Now, in our darkest hour, I've been asking for help to place our 3 remaining dogs and NOTHING! Three people reached out to help. I've even offered free fencing materials to any adoptive homes. Conversely, 15 Clermont County dogs (pit and pit mixes) were placed in less than a month because everyone mobilized.
I am even more disappointed in the human race, especially "caring animal lovers" who are now turning their backs on us. This just solidifies the decision in my mind that closing ARAS is the right move for me and my family.

I guess if I threaten to euthanize the dogs at the end of January that would elicit a response, but, mostly, it would elicit criticism on how heartless I am.

I made a promise to these dogs, all my animals, that I would not find the easy way out and I will find them homes, but know our doors will permanently close on January 31, 2021.

Most donations stopped as soon as I announced we are closing five months ago. Because I still had animals to place, we remained fully operational even though most of the donations dried up. I still did not turn my back on the kids.

I will travel to place them in suitable homes or rescues. Heck, I drove to Denver to bring Cooper to his new home. I also took TJ to a meet and greet in Columbus on Wednesday. DISTANCE IS NOT AN ISSUE.

Once more:

FOSTER: needs hospice/fospice/forever home because he was just diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy.

SOPHIE: loving, playful. Needs a home with no other pets. Loves people.

ROSIE: would do best in home with single active person who loves to swim, hike, jog. Very loving on her own terms.

ROSIE NEEDS A VERY SPECIAL HOME BY JANUARY 31st.

MY PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS ON ROSIE SINCE I STARTED CARING FOR HER MONTHS AGO: Rosie is a wonderful girl. I can tell she really loves me and has never shown any aggression towards me in the entire time she's been at ARAS. She is very clear about her motives if you can read her body language. She greets me every morning with kisses. She brings me a toy. She wants hugs before she goes out. She does come for petting and attention. She's not food aggressive, at least with me. She just wants things to be on her own terms. If she needs me to be hands off, I am hands off. Her body language is so clear and easy to read. Rosie loves walking and jumping in water. She even likes it when it rains. --Perla

COOPER TRIP TO DENVER PART 2: After a restful night in Kansas, COOPER and I embarked on the second part of our trip to Denver, but not before some morning-cuddle selfies. Upon arriving at the Denver Airport, COOPER spotted his old friend Ian and I no longer existed after that. Both were the happiest I've ever seen them. Ian took him for a walk, introduced him to Dusty, an ARAS alum, and then, after catching up, they started their 4.5-hour drive west to their new home, after many unsuccessful attempts on my part to say goodbye.

In my experience with dogs and cats, you made a good match when, upon dropping them off in their new home, you become a persona non grata, much like today. I consider the 1202-mile, 2-day trip a huge success.

COOPER TRIP TO DENVER -- PART 1: COOPER embarked on his journey to his forever home in Colorado. He got to travel in style and there was no shortage of panting (very nervous in cars) and kisses. We stopped for the night in Kansas and he claimed his bed as soon as we got into the hotel room. He's still snoozing. Today, we will meet dad Ian at Denver Airport where I will catch a very late flight back to Cincinnati. Before he left, COOPER decided he needed to pack the tennis ball basket/launcher we had for sale as he intends to have a very playful and active existence.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TO MAKE THIS TRIP POSSIBLE.

After spending a bit over one year at ARAS due to behavioral issues, COOPER is embarking on his final journey to his forever home next weekend. However, it is in Colorado.

COOPER will be joining his old friend Ian, a retired disabled marine and former ARAS volunteer extraordinaire, in Grand Junction, CO. Ian's beloved greyhound Hoon passed away and he is ready to add to his canine family. (Ian has already adopted our blind Pom Dusty.)

I will be driving COOPER to Colorado next weekend to ensure he arrives safely and I can get Ian some much-needed supplies.

If you could please make a donation to offset the costs of the trip to Colorado, we will be most appreciative. I plan on driving one way and flying back immediately. The trip should cost us about $1,000. Your tax-deductible donation is needed in order to reunite COOPER and Ian.
Thank you in advance.

So, for the great news, LEIGH is in her new temporary home with foster momma Stephanie and her crew. LEIGH has been enjoying watching the large TV and taking naps next to her older siblings. It took us a while to find this incredible foster home for this incredible girl, but we are incredibly happy she did. Stephanie lost her dog recently who suffered from seizures for many years, so we are comfortable LEIGH is in great hands. Here are photos of LEIGH enjoying some loving in the car, at home watching TV and with her new foster family. (LEIGH's entire floor must be covered so that she does not slip.)

Yesterday we got some great news and some horrible news. First the bad. FOSTER was taken to the vet yesterday for his issues with his back legs. He was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy (DM). DM is a disease affecting the spinal cord, resulting in slowly progressive hind limb weakness and paralysis. FOSTER is a 10 year old mastiff-boxer mix that would love to find his forever home. FOSTER needs to go to a home without pets. Water therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic medicine were recommended so that his condition could be stalled as long as possible. Here he is tired from his vet visit.

Could use volunteer help to dismantle, transport and set up ARAS' now-defunct and unused catios/outdoor catteries at Red Oak Animal Rescue (ROAR). Wendy Lake could definitely use these at her farm/animal sanctuary as she has many cats for adoption and has offered to take some of our cats unless they found forever homes. I encourage you to visit ROARs FB page. Rescue life is hard. Farm-animal rescue life is even harder as you now have to deal with inclement weather, predators and huge feed bills.

Wendy could really use these cateries, so please please take a few hours during this busy time and help.

There are 3 catios total and both locations are in New Richmond.

THE GIFT OF YOUR TIME AND TALENT IS THE MOST PRECIOUS GIFT YOU CAN GIVE.

A huge thank you to Kevin B. and OAR in Madisonville for taking in our last kitty TILLIE. TILLIE was considered unadoptable due to her refusal to use the litter box. She will now be a lifelong resident of the Joanie Bernard Home for Cats, a 100% no kill shelter, much like ARAS was.

With that, ARAS IS NOW OUT OF THE CAT BUSINESS. :(

12/14/2020

We are still in desperate need of finding this little baby a temporary home. LEIGH has diminished mental capabilities and she needs a quiet home, preferably with other dogs, where she can be cared for a few months. LEIGH has seizures which are well under control. She is under the care of Medvet's neurologist and all her costs are fully sponsored. LEIGH is not your typical dog. She doesn't bark, she paces sometimes, she loves her food and treats and she loves to hear other dogs and people speaking softly to her. She needs a small area that is protected with rubber mats and comforters (which we will provide) so she does not slip. We will provide you with everything she needs: food, treats, medications, mats, linens, transportation, and even help, if you need it.

TIME IS BECOMING CRITICAL. We still have 7 dogs we need to place and, because Clermont Animal Care is closing, we will take a back seat because our kids have DISCLOSED issues.

LUCY's other daughter RASCAL also left the sanctuary for a new life at Our Farm Sanctuary where he she will become a senior foster kitty. Thank you to both OFS and Kim G. for sponsoring her medical care. Unfortunately, our local vet clinic is booked through January for surgeries, so we had to find another option for RASCAL. Here is RASCAL on her way to her new life. (Thank you to my sister Laura for transporting her to Tipp City despite her cat allergies.)

Thank you to this amazing couple who adopted 3 of the remaining 4 kitties. As LUCY, WINNIE and NIKKI lived together and were used to each other, they felt bad about breaking them up and the sanctuary's current situation. WINNIE is an older kitty who loves being held. LUCY and daughter NIKKI, once feral kitties, called the sanctuary home since 2011. LUCY, a kitten herself at the time, roamed the streets of New Richmond with her litter. They were part of the first cat round up we did. It took years for them to warm up to people.
