We’ve been enjoying the Amery School Horsemanship Class for the past 8 weeks. Today we had the privilege of shadowing our very talented farrier as he worked on a horse with a front hoof abscess, a mini horse, and trimmed one of the horses for the first time at the farm. We’re so grateful to Steve for his spectacular trimming and also his willingness to share knowledge and experience with these students!

For 25 years I have loved this boy with his Yoda ears. As a hyperactive 12 year old, I watched with eager anticipation as my parents bid on him. He was an ugly little weanling with legs too long and a face much too big. He was to be my lesson in capitalism. A young horse for me to train and sell at a profit; I guess I’ve always been a terrible seller of horses…

Victory never did grow into his face, but his body did catch up to his legs. The night of the auction the trailer door was left open on accident and that homely little weanling ran 8 miles from our farm. With many prayers and much searching we did locate him! We used sassy little Phantom to entice him into the trailer. He wouldn’t eat hay or grain and the vet we consulted determined he was going through “emotional distress” over a very likely recent weaning from his mama. The vet said if he would start drinking milk from a pail he would maybe make it. The night he goofily gulped his first sips of milk I named him Victory, because surely he was going to make it!
This fall he started to show his age and started to lose interest in eating. I made the decision yesterday that we would try 2 more weeks for another victory of weight gain before we would decide if it was unfair to keep him for the winter. This morning his body made it clear that our borrowed time was over. Zach made him the sweetest little temporary space to eat as much fresh grass as he wanted today and we shared snuggles and scratches. Once again, he’ll join sassy gal Phantom. We’ll miss you old boy 💔. Thanks for being the best boy a little girl could ask for!

I’ve never seen a more beautiful sight…. This time of year when our workers return to school, lessons and activities slow down significantly to what I can staff alone. We are so grateful for understanding clients who realize that this will always be the most important part of Johnson Family life. Our babies will only be little for a fleeting instant. Thank you for your patience as we get back to phone calls, emails, and have some reduced availability in the fall/winter. We love not missing these moments 🥰.

What a whirlwind day! We were blessed with cooperative weather and enthusiastic riders today! Audra had to have a picture with her fabulous cousin, Josie, who pitched in to keep things running smoothly.
