A little bit of an update on April!

It’s been just about a week since April broke her splint bone, and she is under vet care rehab and has been surprisingly comfortable (with medication etc in place). She has dealt with some anxiety not being able to be out with others and being more confined, and the care team is working to keep her calm and content as best as possible.

Followers, we need your help.

Most of you know we foster for a wonderful local rescue, NEER North. Our goal is to take in horses with hoof-based lameness issues and get them more sound so they are adoptable as more than just companion horses.

We currently have a sweet foster mare, April, who came in October. She had previously foundered and had some hoof issues. She came to us, was diagnosed with PPID, started meds and a new diet and moved onto our track with tested hay and various surfaces to move over.

She has settled right into our herd here, lost a good amount of her excess weight and fat pads, and has been doing well!

Unfortunately her luck turned a bit. It was pretty windy last night and I think the herd must have gotten a bit spooked or rowdy and this morning we found her with a small cut on the inside of her hind leg just above her fetlock, with swelling and lameness. Upon vet exam, we discovered that she has broken her splint bone, and pretty badly. The vet is recommending surgery due to the bone displacement, and she is on antibiotics as there is some worry of infection.

April could use some help for these vet bills and hospital bills. As her foster, we cover all feed, supplements, hoofcare, and daily care as well as basic medical needs, but NEER ultimately covers these bigger vet bills- and NEER has been hit with a lot of vet bills lately from a lot of their rescue horses!

If you feel so inclined, please head on over to their page to donate to them directly for vet care, or use these codes for their Venmo or PayPal:

Any little bit helps. This mare is so sweet and those that know her know she deserves our help!

Some pictures of her enjoying the hay stations the last few weeks, and a photo of the injury found this morning that ended up being a lot more sinister than just a cut!

Just a quick update - we are surviving winter here slowly but surely! But a crazy few weeks it has been. We added a shed extension to ensure everyone can get out of the weather without being crowded, and surprisingly April and Jo have been seen cuddling into the smallest section!

They’ve also been snoozing in the woods on occasion.

We are just waiting for the thaw, and hoping we make it through mud season unscathed!

It’s been a while since we had an update on Ms. April.
She is really such a character, and has learned where she fits in her little mare herd and is learning to share space. She can be a bit bossy to our “low man” in the herd, but overall the crew is doing well.

Once back on pergolide (which we briefly took a break from to start over and titrate up to help prevent her awful pergolide veil), her hoof sensitivity all but resolved and she is now completely transitioned out of her rehab boots - even on the hard frozen ground! We still have them as a back up just in case things change, but fingers crossed, she is doing okay 🤞

This is her on the left, after an overnight snow last week!

Another quick update!

With the rain last week then quick drop to below freezing temps, our foster horse April was a bit sensitive over the frozen ground. Elisa Zygiel graciously donated a pair of therapy boots that we can add quick studs to for when it’s frozen and she needs some extra support!!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to our non profit recently - whether that be supplies or monetary donations- we are so appreciative!!

Video of sweet April trying on a boot for the first time 🙈 I had just walked up to her on the track and put it on, I didn’t think she would be so confused! She is such a character.

It’s been a bit since we have updated!

April, our foster who came with previous laminitic history and front end lameness and hind end stiffness, has been pretty affected by the “pergolide veil” and hasn’t been interested in eating any “meals” or supplements other than hay, so we are backing off and starting from scratch for her meals.
A good thing we have noticed is she has lost a lot of her fat pads, although it’s harder to tell with the winter coat now grown in!

She is really starting to calm down and we were able to trim all 4 feet today.. we have before photos of her hooves, but no afters because she was done with us by that point (the body pictures were taken after the trim and she didn’t want to stand for them either 🙈)

She is really a beautiful horse with a lot of personality (and opinions!) and we look forward to seeing her feet and body changes over the coming months 🙏

For photo reference- with the fat pad loss, we can really see where she is lacking muscle (possibly from PPID issues), so we will watch to see how she builds that and changes with more time on the track.

All hoof photos are pre-trim!

If you want to support April’s journey or any future foster or scholarship horses, please reach out! We are currently looking to expand the shelter on the rehab track, and donations are appreciated and all tax deductible to our 501c3.
Our Venmo is or PayPal is [email protected]

Stay tuned for more updates!

Ms. April has been settling in here on the track, and starting to get used to the routine! While I was at a hoofcare conference in Chicago last week we learned from NEER North that April had a sponsor who is helping to cover her hay and basic costs ❤️ We are grateful for the support!!

I always thought I could figure out how to get any horse to eat minerals after the 20-30 horses we have had come through here in the last 1.5 years… but April has proven to be exceptionally picky. She won’t eat the powdered Vermont Blend or liquid Emcelle (vitamin E) when in her feed. Thankfully Nicole over at Custom Equine Nutrition, LLC sent us some samples of the pelleted Vermont Blend which April is happily eating, but we would love some suggestions for a pelleted vitamin E that is effective and palatable if anyone has any input!

If anyone would like to donate pelleted vitamin E or pelleted Vermont Blend, please send me a message, every little bit helps ☺️

Soundness wise, April’s been moving consistently on the track. As the adrenaline wore off from the newness here, we do see some stiffness through her hind end especially. She has upright/clubby front feet as well. On a positive note, her fat pads seem to already be softening from moving around the track!

We are hoping this girl loses weight, gets strong and sounder, and grows in a healthier hoof connection and more comfortable feet with her time here.

If you’d like to donate towards her rehab or put anything towards a fund for future fosters or scholarship rehab cases, you can send a tax deductible donation to our 501c3 non-profit Venmo ☺️ we do also have Zelle that goes right to our 501c3 account if you send it to [email protected].

Stay tuned for more updates as her new hoof starts to grow in.. once we can get some regular supplements into her!

When my vet texted me to let me know a horse at our local rescue NEER North could use the help of a track system and some hoof rehab, and it coincided with a rehab horse heading home, I knew we had to take a chance to foster and see if we could help her.

Everyone meet April! April is a mid-teens mustang cross (getting to know her, I’m definitely sensing some Morgan in there). She has foundered in the past and has a history of front end lameness. She was also just diagnosed with PPID, alongside high insulin numbers, and we are slowly titrating up medication. And as you can tell from her photos, this girl is carrying some extra pounds around!

April is transitioning to our hilly “cardio” track system with tested hay to ensure we get her on the right path to comfort and soundness and help her lose some weight.
Ideally we will get her back under saddle and available to the right home who can continue the work we put into her.

April is kind of a big deal here as she is the very first horse to benefit from our non-profit status. For the start of her rehab, we are using the funds that our Open House event in July raised, and the rescue is also helping with feed costs. As she will be completely under the umbrella of the non-profit, we will also be accepting sponsors to help with her costs and care and to relieve that financial burden from the rescue, as they are already overloaded!

If you’d like to sponsor her, whether anonymously or openly, please message the page! We also are always accepting tax-deductible donations through our 501c3 non-profit Venmo account, The Humble Horse, Inc., and all funds will be used for current and future fosters or scholarship rehab cases ❤️
It should be under “charities” ☺️

Stay tuned… and thank you all for making this possible!

I apologize for the lack of posts lately, but I wanted to give an update on the Open House!

We had a great turn out and were able to raise some funds towards our non-profit efforts, and are looking to take in our first local foster from NEER North in just a few weeks!!

I will post about the foster once everything is confirmed, and then update everyone on her progress in soundness and hoof health. We will also have options to sponsor her continuing care, and even have chances to meet her for potential adopters.

I won’t give out any details until she is at the farm and settled in, but we are excited to see if we can help her become more comfortable!
