You don't even have to own one. Research shows just 5 to 20 minutes interacting with other people's pooches can reduce stress hormones and increase well-being.

When it's higher than 80°F outside, DO NOT heavily exercise your dogs outside!

A walk in the cooler hours of the day is fine or a slow meander when it’s hot. If your pet is at an increased risk of overheating, it’s especially important to monitor them closely while outside on humid days.

Cracked Window Myth

K-9 Rico is sad when he hears our Community Service Officers or Patrol Officers responding to a call with a dog in a hot parked vehicle. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, cracking the window isn't enough to keep the temperature of your car at a safe level. If your dog is distressed and at risk of severe injury or death, that cracked window will be shattered if that's what we need to do to save your pet's life.

It's going to be in the 90s this week. Don't leave your pet in your vehicle, window cracked or not. Leaving your buddy at home is safer, and we all love coming home to a wagging tail! If you must take your pet with you, use grocery pick-up or do it during the evening hours when it's dark.

You also need to think about your buddy's paws when taking them for a walk when the sun is blazing. Asphalt temperatures can be more than 50 degrees warmer than the air temperature. Four Paws International has a simple test you can do to make sure the ground is safe for your four-legged friend. Touch the back of your hand to the ground for seven seconds. If you can't hold it there for seven seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

K-9 Rico approves this message.

‼DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR ON A WARM DAY‼

It doesn’t matter if you are parked in the shade or if the windows are down – that car is going to act like an oven! The inside temperature will continue to rise, making it extremely dangerous for our pets! Left the AC on? Cars often stall –we see these cases a lot. The best way to keep your pets safe is to leave them at home!

With all of the different types of ice melts, we often get asked about which products are best for our pets. The thing is…there is no such thing as 100% pet-safe ice melts. There are only “less harmful” options. View the graphic for more information and if you have any questions or concerns, consult with your family veterinarian.

Inappropriate urination is also a common reason cats are surrendered to shelters/ rescues🙁

Today is National Houseplant Appreciation Day! We put together a list of 10 non-toxic plants for cats & dogs. Before you bring any plant into your home, it’s always important to confirm if the plant is safe for your pets by using ASPCA’s Toxic and Nontoxic Plant Guide: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

What is your favorite non-toxic houseplant?

Do your dogs bark like crazy when the doorbell rings or if someone knocks?!
Ours did!! It drove me batty! Until I started "training" the people that came over🤣
Here is what I ask our guests to do:
1. If I know the person, I tell them to just walk in, do not knock or ring the bell
2. Take a treat from the container at the door
3. Have the dogs sit when they come in and give them the treat! We worked up to this, in the beginning, I only asked that they give them the treat. As the dogs got used to that, they then had to sit.

If someone you don't know comes to the door, you can try having 1 person answer the door and another having the dogs sit (anywhere in the house) and give them treats and ask them to stay!

We also have treats at each gate of our fence, so when neighbors come over, friends etc.. they can do the same thing!

These both have worked well for our family, so I thought I'd share!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!
