National Dog Week was started by World War I veteran and canine advocate Captain William Lewis Judy in 1928, with the aim of educating pet owners and community members about the responsibilities of dog ownership at a time when dogs were primarily housed on chains in backyards. Upon returning from the war, William Judy acquired Dog World Magazine, which remains the oldest all-breed dog magazine in the country today. He continued to publish the magazine for more than 40 years6.

Judy’s mission was to educate dog owners about caring for their dogs responsibly. He was a founder of the Dog Writers Association of America7 and believed a week long celebration in dogs’ honor was the least we could do to recognize the service and steadfast loyalty of our canine companions.

On this historic day in 1944, Allied troops invaded the beaches of Normandy, France. It is the largest amphibious assault in world history. This massive, bloody battle was the turning point of the war in the European theater.

On this day, 156,000 troops from the United states, Great Britain and Canada stormed five beaches. American troops landed on Omaha and Utah beach. At the same time, British troops landed on Gold and Sword beach. And, Canadian forces landed on Juno Beach. 4,000 Allied troops died on these beaches on D-Day, 2,000 of them were American.

Please take a moment of silence today, and thank the many soldiers who fought and died for our country on D-Day

To the ones who are serving, to the ones who have served and to the ones that have given the ultimate sacrifice. We salute and honor you today.

History:
Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Throughout our history, it is well documented that our canine companions played a vital role in our military. These courageous dogs carried first aid supplies to the wounded, delivered messages between the lines, served as watchdogs for the men in the trenches, and tracked enemy soldiers. They also transported equipment and supplies. Tragically though, many lost their lives along the way.

One way in which we have paid homage to the dogs who have lost their lives while serving in the military is through the War Dog Memorial on Guam. The memorial is a life-sized bronze and granite statue of Kurt, a Doberman who saved the lives of 250 Marines by warning them of approaching Japanese troops, and displays the names of 25 Dobermans who gave their lives.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a month when people all across the mental health community join together to help spread awareness around mental illness to let people know that they are not alone.

The stigma that surrounds mental illness and mental health makes it difficult for some people to seek treatment and get the help that they need and deserve. The stigma can cause some people to feel shame about the symptoms and struggles that they are facing. They may be embarrassed to seek help for fear that others will find out, and they may feel alone in their struggles like they’re the only ones going through a similar situation.
