Boxer Story
We have owned a total of 5 boxers since early 2004.
The main reason I started breeding boxers is because, six years ago we purchased a boxer named Bella from a breeder in Missouri. She was our sons FIRST dog, she came home with 2 remaining doses of antibiotic. Then, 10 days after bringing her home she was having trouble breathing, she had a froth around her mouth would not lay down, eat or drink. We ran her to the vet, she had pneumonia. 3 days later (on a Tuesday) she had gotten even worse and was losing weight. I took her back to the vet, blood tests revealed her white blood count was down, x-rays showed a very sick set of lungs. She needed to stay at the vet for IV antibiotics. I called the breeder as I was leaving the vet asking if her vet had given the RX she came home with us with. “Yes” she gave me the name of her vet so our vet could contact him and see what they were treating their strands of pneumonia with since her body was not responding to the wide spectrum she was on. Our vet was administering the original antibiotic he had prescribed as well as one the vet in Missouri said was one they had seen success with, along with a steroid and fluids. I took our son for a visit that evening after school, we were so sad over her skeleton of body. Wednesday morning when I called to check on Bella’s status, he said we need to prepare for her passing. She had not improved and was refusing to eat! Oh good heavens! How do I even tell my son this? Again we went to visit after school on Wednesday, we were able to get her to eat almost an entire small can of dog food.
My son had no idea of what I had been told that morning. We left feeling hopeful. Thursday morning I called to check on her after dropping our son off at school. I was told she had chewed off her IV overnight and she had made a great turn around, we could come pick her up anytime! OH HAPPY DAY! This was the beginning of many visits to the vet, many blood draws and x-rays. It took about 6-7 months of fulltime meds then we went 1/2 doses then finally, 2 years in and about $5000 later she was off all medications. However, over this time she had the skin condition from a mite that they only get from their mother (dogs who carry this mite are NOT supposed to be breed) and ear infections. Our little Bella is a priceless dog, the best first dog for a boy to love.
