Observed annually on April 4th today is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the millions of stray animals around the world and the issues they face. This observance encourages people to take action, whether it's through adopting pets, donating to animal shelters or advocating for stronger animal welfare policies.
There are approximately 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats in shelters across the United States, hoping that their forever pet parent will walk through the door, this is better than the streets but still not acceptable. We need to do better!
Stray animals whether cats, dogs, or other species are often abandoned, lost, or born without a home. They are vulnerable to various hardships, such as exposure to harsh weather, disease and malnutrition. World Stray Day calls to the importance of responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation and the need for better animal rescue and rehabilitation programs.
Bailey (ID # A056908), was picked up as a stray an impounded at Calaveras County Animal Services on 12/04/23. Bailey came in wounded and based on her injuries it appeared she had been in a fight. She received urgent care at our contracted vet clinic ACVH, and recovered quickly. Sadly, like many stray dogs, no one ever came to claim Bailey to take her home. Unfortunately, Bailey has been at the shelter for 486 days! Living in a shelter is no life for an animal. Bailey is looking forward to going home with her new person or family. Please support your local animal shelter – ADOPT don’t SHOP!
