Longsnouts Dog Training

Longsnouts Dog Training We would love for all dogs to be as joyful as Sir Winston Longsnoutl!

[We're named for a member of the Longsnout canine clan, but shortsnouts are welcome, too!]

In December of 2013, we - randomly, yet driven by synchronicity - had the opportunity to foster a purebred Black & Tan Coonhound found as a stray on the streets of southeast Detroit. He was taken under the wing of American Black & Tan Coonhound Rescue, his stay with us was coordinated via SE Michigan's resc

ue network, and he was named Sir Winston Longsnout. Despite being dumped, ridden with worms, and ridiculously skinny, the 7-9 month old male was the most naturally joyful animal ever encountered and our week with him was a whirlwind of tailwags, dog smiles, romps in the snowy backyard, and cuddles. We offer relationship-building tools via reward-based training in the form of: training walks, runs of all lengths, 1:1 training sessions, and small group training classes (coming in 2015!). It will be an honor to partner with you and your canine(s) to help bring that joy to your relationship.

Livvie’s enrichment plan: lock, sniff, YELL A LOT. my words from 2022 still resonate:

Livvie.

9 years ago, I couldn’t have foretold the story she’d help me create. She’s been behaviorally ‘easy,’ yet oh so damned difficult.

My first working dog and I didn’t know it.

She brought me into the world of scentwork.

She helped me create a life of dialogue with dogs, not stage management or dictatorship.

She’s incredibly healthy yet the one who’s seen more vets in a2 than all of my dogs because of the trouble she creates. 🙄

She drives me *insane* and is the reason I make sure everyone’s enrichment plans* are met. (Because if Livvie isn’t happy, we ALL know it!)

Yes, the is *FAR* more challenging than the 3 .

And NINE years ago, I signed an adoption contract. I’m grateful for the trainer she’s pushed me to become.

* our enrichment plan is simple. Have they: chewed, sniffed, licked, destroyed today?

Training Club.

A time for Dog Nerds to practice their skillz…and trainers to work their own dogs!

Grateful our pals were ready to dive in and motivate some folks to do more with their doggos! It’s a new thing, a fun thing, and we’re working on flow and structure.

Great day!

National Dog Day.

I’ve run through EVERY single emotion living with my 8 and 40+ . Most of the time, there’s laughter and silliness.

There’s also the 1000s of shelter dogs and clients who’ve helped me blossom and create a little Longsnouts corner in the world. I’m grateful for each of them for the me they’ve handcrafted.

Kali, Maverick, Dominic, Dougal, Cilla, Kenna & Maeve - each of you has my whole heart.

Fosters and clients - the list is too long. Know you’re loved!! Give your kiddos snuggs and smooches today…

It's my Best Guy's birthday today. NINE. Unbelievable because it's flown by...and I hope we have *many* more. Regardless, passing time reminds me to make the most of each day!

We went for a woodsy walk on a friend's property and ran a couple sniffy problems. I sent this, his final problem, to our researcher friends so they could see what the work looks like.

This was our first time using our smallest hides: in stainless steel wire "paper," folded into moldable sachets. There's about a tablespoonful of freeze-dried eggs in each of them.

This is also Dougal's first 2 hide SLF search. Not a large area, but large enough given we'd just gone for a lovely offleash romp. (We've got some stamina rebuilding on the docket now that the weather is less evil.)

Of course he was brilliant: he's Dougal!

Mr. Z. In our quest to figure each other out, especially when it comes to play and a genetic desire to ‘destroy,’ we’ve come a loooooooong way.

Some of y’all know he wasn’t *yet* a resource guarder when he arrived, but it wouldn’t have taken much to turn him into one. Watching his ears flatten as he side eyed me whenever there was a toy in his mouth, I knew we’d be going slow. My style is to always provide a safe space and ample resources to build trust. It’s the best beginning to any relationship.

Our 2-toy play is (now) exceptional! (God bless dopamine!) He’s not ready to trade/fetch to a hand, but he will consistently drop toys near me AND approach me to lean in with a toy in his mouth. Both massive leaps for this kid and very new.

I had a last-second opportunity to attend a seminar yesterday to talk about all things play in dog training. Totally up my alley, right? Inspired by the day, I grabbed a couple box store toys to see which he’d prefer as a way to introduce tug.

Arousal - how amped a dog is or can get - is a spectrum. Mr. Z has ZERO ability to self-regulate and I’m not interested in getting him so amped I get hurt or we lose the trust we’ve built. Which meant all steps would be baby and exploratory.

So, today we tried tug. I applied MINIMAL pressure because his ears flattened fast the first couple times he realized we were holding on to the same toy…but he quickly got the hang of it. Nothing intense, just a lotta laughs.

Enjoy an outtake (more on insta)…and, yes, better tug toys that keep my hands away from are on the way!
