Deer activity is starting to pick up around here again. Deer coming into the the yard in the evenings and at night has lily getting that itch! A couple weeks back a good friend of mine gave us a call on a buck that he had shot in the evening which he had tactacam footage of the shot. The deer ducked right as the arrow was hitting. The shot looked pretty fair in full motion but when slowed down it was questionable. We loaded up and went to Cornwall after this buck. Lily picked up the track right away with no blood. We went about 100 yards across a field into the woods. Lily got pretty excited and not very far in we found first blood. After about 50 yards we found the bed. Lots of blood. Resembled lung blood. So we decided to push forward with the track. After about 500 yards lily lost interest and we had ran out of blood. We restarted her twice and she went exactly where she did the first time. Indicating to me that the deer had went that way. I was beginning to think we were on a live deer but it just didn’t make sense with the amount of blood with bubbles in it. The hunter marked last blood on his onX app and decided to pull off and try a grid search the next day. The following day, the hunter returned with no luck. A couple days went by and the hunter sends me a picture from his cell cam and low and behold there’s the buck that he shot. Still alive. Shot was a little high from ducking the shot and clearly missed everything vital. That makes two we’ve tracked that lived thru bow shots. Deer don’t always duck the shot but you should be prepared and aim a little low in case they do!
