Did you know your pup can benefit from regular teeth brushing too? Regular dental care can spare your dog from issues like gum disease, heart disease, and just plain old bad breath.
If you have never brushed your dogs teeth before, the best time to start introducing a teeth brushing routine is now! If your dog has already decided they want nothing to do with the tooth brush, no need to worry. Here are a few tips to try to get them used to the idea.
🛑Don’t force it - This is the most important part of introducing any new hygiene routine to your pup. Give them the option to walk away or stop at any point. This is a bonding activity, but a punishment.
🥜 Use a tasty toothpaste! -We recommend peanut butter flavor.
🗣 Lots and lots of communication- it’s easy to forget to talk your dog through the process since they don’t say much back, but it’s important to give verbal cues. Your language and tone helps them anticipate what will happen next and feels relaxed.
🪥 Use a brush that has soft bristles. This is especially important if you have tried brushing before and they back away. If your pup has sensitive gums that have not been brushed regularly it may be hurting them. Try a soft brush with a light touch.
🎉 Make it fun! This can be a great bonding activity for you and your pup. It takes a lot of trust for your dog to allow you to put something in their mouth so be patient. Try to do this when you are feeling relaxed and can focus of building the relationship with your furry friend.
