The Truth About By-Products & Meal in Pet Food

Pet food labels can be confusing, especially when it comes to by-products and meal. So, let’s break it down!

🚨 What’s Wrong with By-Products?
By-products in pet food can include beaks, feet, feathers, diseased tissue, and even roadkill. Since regulations don’t require companies to disclose exactly what’s used, “chicken by-product meal” or “meat by-product” can mean anything. Our pets deserve better than mystery meat!

✅ Is Meal Always Bad?
Not necessarily! A named protein meal (like chicken meal or salmon meal) can be a good source of concentrated protein. But if the label just says “meat meal” or “animal by-product meal,” that’s a huge red flag—it could come from expired grocery store meat (packaging included!), euthanized animals, or even rodents.

👉 Check Your Pet’s Food Label!
