What does it really mean to "let them go on a good day?"

It means it will be your hardest day. It won't matter if you've never done it before, or if you're gifted a dozen good days, each good day is always the hardest one.

It means they won't know what the fuss is about, why they're getting so many treats and extra belly scratches and hugs.

It means you will second guess your decision right up to the very last moment, the very last breath. You'll second guess yourself afterwards.

They'll knicker at you when you arrive, just like any other day.

The weather, perfect. They are content. They look sound today. They are breathing well, eating well, they get up easily enough from a nap in the sun....the list goes on. Whatever issue they struggle with, today they aren't.

Today you euthanize them.

This is what going on a good day means: sending them out while they are happy, while they are healthy, while they are eating well, walking well, etc. You make the choice to do it before an emergency takes the choice away from you, before your horse has to experience any more trauma or pain.

Their last memory will be filled with love.

It'll rip your heart out every time.

We can see the patterns and the increasing trends. We can predict it a little. We can obsess over the past and worry about the future.

Fortunately, horses, all animals, live in the moment. They don't worry about those things. They aren't worried about winter. They aren't worried about July, or allergies, or progressive diseases like cushings or dsld. They don't think about the close calls they've had before, and they certainly aren't thinking about the close calls that are destined to come, as their body continues to age and break down. They just are. They are happy and healthy, or fearful and in pain, on that day, in that moment.

It is the most difficult, most loving gift we are blessed to be able to give.

And that first ice storm will come, that first deep snow, that first heat wave....and you will find a little relief, no longer doubting the choice you made.

They were happy, and safe, and loved. That is all that matters.

It is never easy. ~Kelly Meister, author

Hi, my name is Thumper my Registered name is Magic Gota Chip. I was born on April 7, 1997. I have had a good life for most of it I was a barrel racing horse. At 16 Hands with a whole bunch of thoroughbred running through my lineage. I Could Turn and Burn with the best of them!!
On September 7, 2020 I was relinquished to Hooves Of Promise. At that time my owner was having trouble keeping weight on or gaining. Since coming to the rescue I have gained weight. I am on free choice hay . I have Cushings so my mom gives me Chaste Berry along with flax and a low starch low sugar grain. I also have a heart condition so sadly I am not able to be ridden anymore.
Thumper needs a SPONSOR
First 3 pictures were taken yesterday. Last photo is from September 2020
If you would like to help Thumper his monthly expenses are $200.

Meet Savannah, the beautiful Azteca mare! Savannah is 13-15 years old and just as sweet as they come. She spent most of her life raising foals, and hasn't been ridden in years. We recommend a full restart for riding. She does have EXCELLENT ground manners. She knows how to lead respectfully, tie, load in the trailer, and stands quietly for the farrier. She's easy to catch and is quite the social butterfly! Whether human or equine, Savannah is a friend to all! She's a great size at 15.1h to boot. She will make an excellent partner for someone ready to put in a little education time with her.

Message us directly for an appointment to meet Savannah!

Ps- can't adopt, but would like to help Savannah find a home? Tax-deductible donations towards her care can be made here: paypal [email protected]
Or mailed to: P.O. Box 347 Arlee Montana 59821

Every penny counts! Thank you!

And of course, spread the word! By sharing Savannah's post, you help widen her audience view. It all makes a difference!

The purpose of Zig Zag Poles is to increase proprioceptive activity. The horse adjusts its balance and stride to cross the variable sized gaps. I call this kind of exercise "nervous system training." You can bring some creativity to this exercise: arrange poles with various widths at each "point" of your Zig Zag, and feel free to either raise poles or leave them on the ground.

Buy the book here: https://www.jecballou.com/store/p/55-corrective-exercises-book

Curious about a progressive conditioning plan using ground poles? Follow the on-line course here: https://jecballou.thinkific.com/courses/groundpoles

A pull back always needs investigation, it can have whole body ramifications and set your horse up for lifelong problems.
Starting at the poll, the kgs of pressure exerted over the top of a complex area of muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves, is Enormous! Several tons of pressure, even if your horse is tied to the inevitable baling twine, immense pressure is still exerted before that twine breaks.
The neck and thoracic sling are stretched and twisted into unnatural positions.
The ribs are pulled out of position by the tortion of the supra spinous ligament, and the thoracic spine.
The fascia and muscles of the back and core are strained.
The lumbar sacral and sacroiliac joints are forced into damaging positions, the stifles, hocks and feltocks can be twisted and compressed. Muscles and connective tissues beneath the scapula can be torn, the pectorals are also at risk. The shoulder and elbow joints can be strained.
Moving back to the poll, the connections from there to the jaw, tmj and hyoid can be strained causing pain and dental imbalance.
Often, after a pull back, the horse will become one-sided, reluctant to bend to one side, tense in the poll and jaw, and unable to engage from behind as well as they could before.
Avoid pull backs as much as is humanly possible but if it happens, get your horse thoroughly checked over as soon as you can. This will help prevent scar tissue and neural patterning from changing your horse forever.
