Meet the Wagnificent K9 Truffle Dog Team! Kristin, Cash, Callie, Da Vinci, and MacGyver are located in Washington State. They hunt truffles and can teach you to hunt truffles with your own dog! After a trip to Italy in 2010 Kristin developed a passion for truffles and decided to teach her own dogs how to find the elusive fungi in the Pacific Northwest. Along with her four dogs, they are now considered some of the very few professional truffle dog teams in all of North America.

Have you ever noticed how a particular scent can transport you back in time? The smell of freshly baked cookies might remind you of your grandmother's kitchen, while the scent of a particular perfume might remind you of someone special from your past. This is because scent and memory are closely linked, and our sense of smell has the power to trigger vivid memories and emotions from the past. Scientists believe this is because the olfactory system, which is responsible for our sense of smell, is directly linked to the brain's hippocampus and amygdala, which are involved in memory and emotion processing. So the next time you catch a familiar scent, take a moment to breathe it in and see where it takes you. You might be surprised at the memories it evokes!

Dogs experience scent memories too! Can you imagine what it is like for our scent-oriented companions and how powerful a scent memory can be for them?

Did you know that truffles grow near the Appalachian mountains? Not surprisingly, one is named after its native mountain range. Across the Midwestern and Northeastern US, The Appalachian truffle is found in forests of spruce and pine. These delicious treasures also thrive among mixed varieties such as oak, hickory, or birch.

Truffles have an aroma truly like no other—one crafted and perfected by Nature. Their enchanting scent serves as a beacon, luring animals close enough so they can be discovered and devoured - dispersing the spores to form new truffles!

Did you know that a dog's nostrils are two separate openings? This allows them to control the amount of air they take in and helps them distinguish smells better. Plus, the shape of the nostrils helps them determine the direction of a smell too! Amazing, right? 🐶😊

DOG SPORTS ARE EXPENSIVE (warning...here come all the feels)

Course fees...

Trial fees...

Injuries and vet bills...

It's a lot to keep up with and can drain your wallet.

What if you could put some of that back in your pocket by spending pressure-free time with your dog in nature?

What if you could learn a skill that didn't require an ongoing investment in classes and competitions?

What if that skill could help pay for the classes and competitions you love?

I've done it for years, and I can show you how!

It starts here. Grab the replay of my webinar, From Forest to Fork: Truffle Hunting with Dogs, and take the first step in teaching your dog to find truffles.

Will the webinar take you from start to finish? No, but it will start you off on the right path.

Will you need more training? Yes. Some. But not indefinitely (I typically only work with one team for fewer than 10 lessons).

My goal is to teach you to truffle hunt with your dog SO YOU CAN afford to do more with your dog. To give you a skill that doesn't require unending expenses.

Will you need to invest in learning the skills? Yes.

Is there an endpoint to that investment? Absolutely!

"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." Lao Tzu
I want to teach you to fish!

The next North American truffle boom is coming. I can guide you to be a pioneer in your area. I've done it before, and you will learn from over a decade of my experience.

But, more importantly, I'll show you the magic of working organically and in partnership with your dog and with reciprocity.

And it will ripple into your sport of choice.

~ Kristin

Most people know that truffles can be found in Europe and the Pacific Northwest. But did you know native truffles have also been reported in these areas of North America? The truffles are there, but where are the truffle dog teams?

Now is your chance to be on the front edge of a truffle boom in North America. Lesser known species of truffles go unharvested in many of these regions and we need more truffle dog teams out there shedding light on these culinary delights.

If you live in these areas, you can be a pioneer for truffle hunting right where you are!

Join me and Fenzi Dog Sports Academy to learn how to get started with truffle dog training. Attend live on Feb 2nd at 6 pm Pacific or catch the replay.

I am so honored to work alongside my dogs and I love sharing this activity with others! It's more than a scent game. It's a conversation between beings and the partnership we share is magical. The communication and connection is unique to each team and can't be standardized to a one size fits all process. Here is my answer to a question I received about teaching groups vs. individuals.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
ASK THE PRO:
Q: Why don't you teach group classes?
A: Because truffle hunting is not a group activity and learning in context allows for faster understanding while eliminating irrelevant variables.

Do you have a question? Ask a professional truffle hunter here...

In the Pacific Northwest, truffles favor the Douglas Fir stands so it helps to know how to identify these trees.

Douglas fir trees are quite distinctive - their flat needles are, 1-1.5 inches in length, the same color on both sides, soft to the touch, and fragrant. The bark is a reddish brown color accented by ridges running vertically up the trunk while its cones can be recognized for being 3 to 4 inches long with prickly scales pointing outward from their centers! The bark on young Douglas Fir trees looks similar to Subalpine fir, but as the tree matures, the bark shows its telltale ridges.

The Oregon Truffle Festival is coming up. This is a big attraction for truffle fans in the US and Canada.
Truffle hunting isn't limited to the Pacific Northwest! Did you know there are truffles in southern states and the eastern US and Canada?
There may be truffles where you live!

The Oregon Truffle Festival is Feb. 14-16 in Yamhill County. The funky fungi, found below Douglas fir trees, are rivaling the price of France's famed truffle scene.

01/23/2023

Did you know that one species of truffle has 30-60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which give the truffle its aroma? Because these VOCs vary within a single species, truffle dogs must identify multiple combinations and concentrations of VOCs produced by a ripe truffle. This is only one reason to use real-whole truffles when training your dog. When training involves exposure to multiple truffles with varying aroma profiles, your dog will accept more combinations of VOCs present in a ripe truffle. You will find more truffles than if you used a scent source with no variability.

Join me to learn more about truffle hunting with dogs on February 2nd at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. This webinar will be recorded so don't worry if you can't attend live. The cost is $19.95 and registration is OPEN!
