(54)

My name is Michael Hoskinson and I have been training dogs since 1990 and it has been my full time pleasure and job since 2005. I got my start training dogs as a job in college, where I was taught how to train K9 Units. I specialized in "attack" and "drug" dogs. Since then I have trained in the areas of: Hunting, Search and Rescue, Seeing Eye, Therapy, Large Agility, and Explosives. Since 2005 I

have focused on family dogs By coming into your home and working one-on-one with you and your dog I am able to focus on specific issues that you face. From puppy training to basic obedience, aggression to separation anxiety, to jumping and running out the front door there is an answer! I use a combination off all the types of training i have used through out the years. Each dog has its own unique personality as well as you and your family. I will customize a training program that is right for your "pack". We will open up the lines of communication between you and your dog. I will teach you how to provide the things your dog needs. Advanced Off Leash and Board and Train also available.

Max was a freight train. Walking had become painful and dangerous for mom! Hot dogs and chicken did slow him down at all. After 3 lessons we have stopped nudging, bumping, pushing, pawing, barking, and counter surfing. We established a 10 foot barrier at the front door and now do some really good practice of the heel. Next lesson is outside!

Behavioral issues are not fixed with hot dogs or chicken. It’s a problem that far exceeds shoveling food at a dog! Any trainer taking that approach is taking your money! Behavioral can only be addressed by a trainer that understands “why” we are having issues. In this instance the problem is Marking Territory” and this is after our second visit! The younger dog was also terrorizing the older dog!

What are some topics or questions you’d like me to discuss or dive into on the podcast?

08/12/2024

Understand the ONLY thing that allows a fearful dog to navigate the world is if it trust 100% in its human to keep it safe! That’s it. Nothing magical and definitely not an abundance of chicken.

08/12/2024

What happens when you trust an experienced trainer and do your homework? Let’s ask this mom!

08/12/2024

You have to push your dogs. Don’t allow them to be average. You have to work to make sure your dog can be its best version of itself!

How do you push a reactive dog??? Just watch.

08/12/2024

This dog was in the first video. It was firing off pulling and lunging at people and dogs! I had the dog for 2-3 minutes and this was the result. If you want to fix reactivity to the point where the dog can navigate around other dogs and people you need to be in control not the dog. I can not LET the dog do what it wants. It is making horrible and non warranted choices to lunge and bark! Understand you will never change the dog. You will however manage the behavior! Night and day difference in minutes. Guess how many treats I used?

08/12/2024

When dealing with reactive dogs there are so many things that are happening that we the human need to gain control of to help our dog. Here is a small discussion about dogs that are people reactive and some of the things that we need to understand as owners that are working their dogs through the fear that causes the reaction.

08/12/2024

This is a REACTIVE DOG group training. I have brought in some of my other clients to facilitate us with training. Not one trainer in the world runs 10-12 reactive dogs in a group, no one! Most trainers are lucky to run 10-12 dogs in a group setting!

If you want to fix a problem you WORK the problem. You don’t treat it! It has its place but it’s not a solution to any problem. It can help reward a good choice however. It by no means can express to the dog that its current behavior in undesirable. Correct the behavior so the dog knows current behavior is undesirable reward the change of behavior and move on. Now repeat that until your dog is comfortable in that scenario! Keep it simple.

08/12/2024

I missed the first two dust ups as I was getting my group settled. This is an example of all treat no correction! Completely unsuccessful as it is every time we see them in the park.

There is one constant and guarantee that everytime a dog goes reactive it was previously in a proper heel and focused on its handler. If not every time then 99% of the time the dog is out of control previous to becoming reactive. You don’t believe me? Start watching and you’ll see it!

This Saturday, 800am Katherine Rose any Aggresive/reactive dogs and anyone else that can show up! Current clients only.

08/05/2024

Humans are hard to train. There is definite a way to maximize communication between yourself and your dog. It takes practice and self evaluation and then repeat that about 1000 times. This dog previously had pulled its owner down to the ground twice, once resulting in a trip to the doctor! Slow and steady keeping in mind the safety of both mom and dog!

08/05/2024

How the training of your 4 month old puppy going?

Teaching our reactive dogs how to be calm and let their human handle the things they are worried about!

WORKING REACTIVE DOGS

Don’t run from it run towards. If you want to help your dog through reactivity throwing a bunch food on the ground will do nothing for you or the dog. A simple correction form the human will let the dog know that the behavior is not proper or warranted. The correction when done out of love of the animal is positive way of telling the dog you can control what they are worried about. You must gain that trust from the dog on the minute by minute, hour by hour and day by day structure you have with your dog. As the dogs run through this type of scenario more and more times, repetition, a new more relaxed behavior is achieved. As we continue to run the scenario the dog only becomes more comfortable!

If your dog can jump all over you, counter surf, bark at and rush the door, sleep on you, pull or lead you around on walks….why in the world would it listen to you when confronted with an issue? Why would it trust you when you tell it “it’s ok”, which by the way is absolute wrong thing to say.

You can’t pick and choose when you want be in control! Always be in control so the dog doesn’t have to. You can’t pick and choose when you are going to parent. You can’t pick or choose when you’re going to be the manager. You can’t pick and choose when you’re an employee. You either are or you aren’t!

08/05/2024

This is our 3rd lesson and we are slowing things down for our dog. She is extremely fearful! We have, however reached the point where we need to start brining her in public to desensitize her. Several small wins will translate to a calmer more relaxed dog. This over time allows us to tackle bigger things. Contrary to what some might say she will never be a social butterfly. We will not change her personality. What we do is provide her with a human that she can put her trust in. Knowing her momma can handle the things she finds scary allows us to put her in situations she is uncomfortable with and work her through them. It’s always a work in progress when dealing with a highly fearful dog!

08/05/2024

In our first lesson this dog was walking on the dining room table and chewing on a napkin holder! During that lesson we stopped all the hyper activity, jumping, pawing, nudge, pawing and destructive behaviors. We set a boundary in the kitchen and at the front door! We also started practicing the Heel.

2nd lesson we moved outside with our heel work. Previously the dog pulled like a freight train.
