Starting January, animals who survive abuse in Florida will finally have a safeguard that follows their abusers, not them.

Florida is creating an animal abuse database designed to stop pets from ever being returned to people who have harmed them. For the first time, shelters and authorities will be able to check real records before placing an animal in a home.

For years, gaps in the system allowed known abusers to adopt again, putting innocent lives back at risk. This database closes that door by keeping cruelty on record and out of reach of vulnerable animals.

Animal advocates say this step could prevent repeat abuse and save countless lives. It sends a clear message that harming animals has lasting consequences.

For pets who already suffered once, this change means something powerful: a real chance at safety, healing, and a future free from fear.

For pet parents, worrying about vet bills and animal safety may finally get a little easier.

Starting in 2026, new laws in Florida will change how pet insurance works and strengthen protections for animals across the state. These updates are meant to help both pets and the people who love them.

One major change focuses on pet insurance. Companies will be required to offer clearer coverage that includes accidents and illnesses, making it easier for families to afford care when their pets need it most.

The new laws also support stronger animal protection efforts by improving how abuse cases are tracked and addressed. Together with Florida’s new animal abuse database, these measures aim to stop animals from being returned to harmful situations.

Animal advocates say these changes show progress. Pets are being recognized not just as property, but as living beings who deserve care, safety, and protection under the law.

The Washington Post picked up on the running theme of the legacy of the DeSantis administration, highlighting that they don’t put science first in resource mgmt decisions
…. and hides 🙈 data and bullies employees.

“A lot of the hunting is on these private properties where we don’t know what’s going on, and law enforcement can’t see what’s going on,” said Katrina Shadix, founder of Bear Warriors United, which unsuccessfully filed suit to stop the hunt. “And now they’re refusing to release bear kill numbers. We didn’t think the state could do this any worse than they did in 2015, but they have managed to outdo themselves.”

“If we have a declining population, any harvest of that population is not sustainable and not in line with the Fish and Wildlife Commission’s stated objectives for this hunt,”said Darcy Doran-Myers, a wildlife biologist who was the assistant black bear research coordinator for the agency for four years, until 2022.

Doran-Myers testified on behalf of Bear Warriors United’s efforts to stop the hunt with a lawsuit.
“I’m disappointed in how my former colleagues at the agency are handling it,” she said. "But one thing to keep in mind here is that the biologists have very little say on what happens.”

🚨BREAKING POSITIVE NEWS🚨

🐴 HISTORY MADE — AND THE FIGHT CONTINUES 🐴

📌As the 2025 Congressional session came to a close, something extraordinary happened.

On the last day of congress for 2025 a total number of 218 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives officially cosponsored the SAFE Act (H.R. 1661) — the Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act.

That means a House majority has gone on record supporting a permanent ban on horse slaughter and the export of American horses for human consumption.

But here’s the truth:
⚠️ Cosponsors do not equal a vote.
⚠️ A majority on paper does not mean the job is done.

The SAFE Act must still be moved through committee, brought to the House floor, passed by the Senate, and signed into law.

And that is where YOU come in.

✨ 2026 MUST BE THE YEAR OF THE HORSE ✨
We need you to continue to :
👉 Call your Representative and Senators
👉 Demand the SAFE Act be brought to a vote
👉 Ask Senate leadership to advance the companion bill
👉 Tell Congress: America is ready to end horse slaughter — once and for all

💫🐴Horses have carried this country on their backs — in war, in work, and in sport.
Now it is our turn to stand for them.

✅ 218 voices in Congress stood up in 2025. Let’s make 2026 the year the law finally changes.👏👏
