If you were at the Deer Season Eve Party, you may remember the Winner of the Bear Hunt, Kirby Moffitt! He went down this past weekend and on opening morning, got his first bear! Here is how it went… Burnie has been going back and forth to the coast for weeks. Putting up cameras, replacing them when the bears rip them apart. Putting out thousands of pounds of peanuts, and the bears using it not just for dinner but also a temperpedic bed! Then, the day before season, Kirby and Burnie set off down to the coast. They did one last check of the spot, which has been frequented by bears over the last few weeks. Just look at the trail cam photos!! That morning… there were bears in the spot as they started down the trail. Nerves were so high for both Kirby and Burnie because they realized that it was unlikely that they would be able to reach the stand and they were going to have to stalk up to them on the ground. So, they held back in the woods and waited. It must have felt like forever before it was light enough to stalk in on them. Their hearts were pounding! Burnie held back and let Kirby creep up there and he got it done!!! Got his first bear on a ground stalk - whew he was thrilled. We are so excited to be able to give away hunts each year and seeing Kirby’s excitement is exactly why we do this business!!! Kirby has a YouTube channel and his theme “Go Early, Stay Late” definitely is paying off!

Update - Yesterday, our crew was up before 6am to head to the mountains. The morning started a little rough.. Burnie and I had to tend to our injured donkey at 5am, we got to the shop with our crew and got everything loaded up (full box truck, 400lb of hamburger meat, 5burners, lots of propane, etc. And then the box truck wouldnt start!! Eeek so we had to jump start the truck😬Then, we piled into the trucks and headed to Hendersonville, south of Asheville. No water, no power but a lot of generosity! We spent over 7hours cooking and serving over 1,000 sandwhiches to local people and road crews. After that, we unloaded our box truck full of items!! We heard people talk about not having a roof, losing their house and staying in their neighbors garage, no showers for over a week, switching out empty propane tanks for full ones to cook, etc - Tough to hear their struggles, but glad to have helped feed and provide a few smiles. Our sloppy joes were getting GREAT reviews, big thanks to Burnie and Steve for cooking! We got home around 10pm last night. We are all glad that we started Harpley’s Helps and that we can help provide some protein to these areas!

For now, a lot of the larger places near Asheville are overrun with donations and are simply trying to coordinate with organizations who can get it to the people that need it! By air, ATV, horses, foot, etc until that is coordinated, many places are not able to accept any more donations. plus, many larger companies are now donating truck loads - so it really is about HOW to get stuff to the remote people and locations. Some of the smaller towns are still in great need though. For the upcoming week, we are going to focus on sending up meat products to locations that can cook and serve!

We could not have done this without all of you who have given!! Although we aren’t currently taking physical donations of items, we can still accept financial donations which will help us deliver the meals to people up there! (Link in comments below)
