This is what it looks like when you surrender your dog to a shelter. This is from a dog who was dropped off to the shelter after being in a quiet home, with a bed, with a family. This is diarrhoea from having an upset stomach. Have you ever been so anxious to the point where you get sick to your stomach? This is a 24/7 feeling for a dog who has been surrendered. “Where is my family?” “Why am I in a cage?” “Why are all these dogs barking at me?” Imagine one day you’re taken from your luxurious life and thrown in prison for no reason, never to see your family again. Did you know 50% of dogs who are surrendered to a shelter don’t make it out? Pets are a lifelong commitment. Do not get an animal if you cannot financially, emotionally, or physically care for one. Newsflash, there is no such thing as a perfect dog or cat. They are expensive and a lot of freaking work. The loyalty of an animal is unmatched. They would never do it to you, so don’t do it to them….

URGENT HOSPICE FOSTER NEEDED!!!!

We are passionate about, and fully committed to helping our local NJ shelters. Woodbridge Animal Shelter Woodbridge Animal Group - WAG is one of our favorites to work with.

This sweet angel is Roxy…and she only has weeks to live, as she has terminal cancer.

Now usually, we would just take sweet Roxy to our Halfway Home House and let her live out her life with us. Sadly, that is not a possibility at this time, but only because we have been answering call after call for help with seniors, hospice, and special needs animals, and we literally do not have a spot for her.

We want to help Roxy, and our friends at Woodbridge, who are also filled to capacity at the moment.

We want Roxy to spend her final days in a home, because even a wonderful shelter is not the same as a home.

We will provide everything that sweet Roxy, who is frail and indifferent to animals, will need. We need you to be her angel. We need to make this happen.

Canine Exercise Tip:

A game of fetch. This involves throwing a ball or frisbee and having your dog retrieve it. If your dog is new to the game or doesn’t know what to do when you toss the ball/frisbee. Encourage him to go after the object you want him to fetch. You can do this by chasing after the object yourself along with your dog. When they grab it, reward him with a motivator of choice (treats) then take the object away. Repeat this a few times, then toss the object a short distance. When he goes for it, immediately reward him again. Repeat the process until you can reliably toss the object and get him to chase it and return it.

Rainy Day Exercise Tip:

Perfect for tomorrow’s weather!

Dogs have a powerful sense of smell. You can use it to play a fun game of “sniff and seek” when bad weather keeps you inside. Strong-smelling treats work well, but you can also use your dog’s favorite toys. Hide things around the house and teach your dog to “seek” or “find it.” I use the term “go get it”.

Another fun game (and one of my favorites) is Hide and Seek. I can’t tell you how much fun I have playing this with dogs on a rainy day! Tell your dog to “stay” then walk away and find a place to hide. I also like to play “chase” where I chase dogs around the house or have them chase me while holding a treat or a favorite toy.

Canine Exercise Tip:

The obvious first and easiest exercise is walking. Most dogs require at least 2-3 walks per day or 30 minutes to 2 hours of physical activity (unless otherwise specified by your vet). A brisk walk is a great opportunity for your dog to burn off extra energy, and a slow, meandering walk – where you let your dog sniff and explore for as long as they want – is great for their mental health.

Founded by FitPaws, Canine Fitness Month aims to get pets and their owners to lead more active, happier lives. Just like humans, dogs benefit immensely from regular exercise and healthy diets. Exercise does wonders to meet our dogs’ physical and emotional needs. Among others, canine fitness prevents diabetes and stress on joints due to obesity. Healthy dogs are happy dogs. By extension, that means their humans are happy too.
