Founded in 2007, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue enhances the lives of companion animals and the people who love them. We work across county lines with the goal of saving the greatest number of lives possible through strategic, creative, and impactful programming. Through adoption and pet retention programs, a low-cost mobile spay and neuter clinic, lifesaving shelter transfer partnerships, extensive v

olunteer and foster networks, and a trap-neuter-return program for community cats, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue impacts the lives of thousands of animals each year in the Western North Carolina region. We operate an adoption center in the heart of Asheville where you can meet your next best friend. On our campus you’ll also find our thrift store and retail store whose proceeds help fund our lifesaving programs. We are a community-based organization and rely on the generosity of our donors to continue our impactful work for animals as we receive no government funding.

When people suffer. Animals suffer. Brother Wolf launched our Stay Together program because our community told us…loudly and clearly…that they need help.

The goal of Stay Together is simple but powerful: keep animals out of the overburdened shelter system and in the homes where they are already loved and safe.

Because of this community-rooted approach, over 500 animals have been able to stay in their homes this year. That’s 500 families still whole. 500 animals still safe. 500+ hearts spared from heartbreak.

This lifesaving work is only possible through individual donations and partnerships. We’re deeply grateful to SPCA International, who recently awarded us a grant to help keep this program going. If you would like to support Stay Together, you can make a donation on our website bwar.org.

Could you leave her with nothing?

No food. No water. Nothing to survive the cold nights.

We don’t know how long Apple Dumpling was alone after being abandoned. We don’t understand why anyone would leave her trapped, without a chance of survival.

We can’t grasp how afraid she must have been going into labor all by herself.

When Apple Dumpling was found, she was curled tightly around her one-week-old puppies. Trying to keep them warm, trying to keep them alive.

Can you imagine that kind of love? To give everything of yourself, so that they had a chance.

We are so proud of her; we wanted to share her story with you all.

This is a long one, but we have a lot to say and we hope you stay and read it.

(1/3) We hardly know where to begin… How do you capture the weight of a storm that didn’t just tear through our town, but through the fabric of our lives?

One year ago, Hurricane Helene decimated Western North Carolina. One of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. A hurricane, here in the mountains. We lost neighbors, communities were swept away, and Brother Wolf’s entire campus…everything we had built since 2007, was swallowed by floodwaters. Every physical asset we relied on to save lives was gone overnight.

The day before the storm hit, something extraordinary happened. In just two hours, 100 animals were urgently evacuated from our shelter and carried into the arms of loving foster homes, saving them from a fate we can't bear to think of.

In the days after, with no power, no water, no internet, our staff met in parking lots and drove through broken roads to orchestrate the transport of 150 animals out of the disaster zone. With partners, we treated over 1,200 injured pets—covered in fish hooks, with broken bones, sick from toxic floodwaters—and stood beside their families as they survived a nightmare.

These are the facts, but no list can tell the whole story. Because the hurricane did not end when the waters receded. It is still here. It is in us. It will be with us forever—a lasting scar and, somehow, a guide for what’s to come.

And through all of it, the animals have been our compass.
