Please consider donating to Athenspets - GA. This rescue helps so many animals at the shelter, in our communities as well as Project Homebound - Athens, GA.
So far in 2024 Athenspets has provided:
π₯ labor and funds to send 714 animals--almost 1/3 of the animals impounded at the shelter to date!--to parts of the country without the same overpopulation issues we face;
π₯ 23 shelter animals with life-saving medical care, from parvo puppies to cruelty victims to animals hit by cars;
π₯ training for the dogs enrolled in Project Homebound - Athens, GA; and
π₯ social media advertising for the shelter animals and weekly outreach events at breweries, farmers' markets, and more (stop by to say hi if you see our booth).
In addition, Athenspets has:
β€ covered the cost of spaying/neutering !658! owned/community animals otherwise at HIGH risk of reproducing and adding to pet overpopulation and shelter overcrowding;
β€ made sure the Community Pet Food Pantry located at Athens-Clarke County Animal Services stays stocked to help provide a safety net for our area's most vulnerable animals;
β€ partnered to provide Pop-Up Vet Care Clinics providing affordable basic pet care in systemically-disadvantaged neighborhoods in Athens to help keep pets healthy and in good, even if impoverished, homes; and
β€ provided no-interest emergency vet care loans in a few cases to keep pets with their families simply by providing a bridge between today's needs and tomorrow's resources.
Weβre committed to doing what it takes to give every animal in the Athens area a chance at a better future and to making our community a humane one, for people and their pets.
But we can't do any of this alone.
Our cost to date for these programs has been $195,000, a truly mind-blowing amount.
But appointments at the local low cost spay/neuter center have not been available, an increasing number of people need help since public appointments are also generally not available there for the neediest categories of animals (female cats and medium/large female dogs), and the transports to move the excess animals produced as a result cost thousands of dollars each week.
It's worth it. Despite record levels of shelter overcrowding and rampant pet overproduction since COVID shut down many spay/neuter options, Athens has been (barely) keeping our head above water. We are big believers in saving for a rainy day, and this year we have spent nearly all of the funds we had squirreled in years past.
Our savings have run out and we need our funds replenished.
Can you help? $5 donations add up quickly and sharing this post will help spread the burden.
Please consider a donation today. Who knows? The life you save might be your next furry family member's π
