The Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill program that focuses on instilling the basics of obedience and good manners and assisting owners in understanding the responsibilities of pet ownership and companionship.

Once your dog masters the 10 skills, you and your pet pass the CGC test TOGETHER, and the owner takes the Responsible Dog Ownership pledge, you and your pup will have earned your Canine Good Citizen award- a great accomplishment for you both!

A perfect sit/stay but that eye contact though!!

Why is eye contact so important on walks? Eye contact shows that your pup is engaged in the activity and is looking to his/her handler for the next command. Your dog should not be making the calls on your walks or during any activity. You are in control of your pet and your pet should recognize that and look to you for the next command.

Remaining calm, collected, and especially positive while working with your animals is so crucial in their development.

Imagine being yelled at and rushed when learning a new skill…how do you think you will associate that skill/activity next time? Probably not in a positive way. Guess what…animals are the SAME!

Make learning and experiencing new things fun and encouraging in order to keep your pets engaged and excited!

What a wonderful weekend with sweet Gnarls! Gnarls joined us for her second board and train this past weekend and she had the best time!

Main areas of focus for Gnarls are leash reactivity to dogs, learning how to read social cues from dogs, and basic impulse control. She showed great improvement from her last session and we look forward to seeing how much more Gnarls is going to improve and grow. Can’t wait to see you again, Gnarly-girl!

Physical exercise builds endurance and strength and can sometimes result in a long nap from your dog. However, it can take a lot of work to successfully tire a dog out with exercise only.

Mental stimulation and exercise is more exhausting, even physically. Dogs of all ages can participate in mental exercise activities whereas geriatric and painful dogs should not participate in strenuous physical activities.

Want more for your pup? Try both! Combine your daily walk/run with intervals of sitting/down-stays, eye contact and focus, and teaching other tricks.

Happy Monday, everyone!! We had such a great time with Lucy the past 10 days for her board and train and we miss her already! We worked on reinforcing basic commands with a focus on impulse control. Lucy made a lot of progress but of course she did not go home a brand new dog. After an intensive board and train, it is time for the owners to practice what they have learned as well. We will be continuing in-home sessions to be sure Lucy and her owners are on the path to success! We’re so proud of you, Lucy-girl!

A full day of socializing and novel experiences means Lucy gets to bring home a new toy!

A major part of training is putting a positive spin on everything taught so the pup is excited to try again. After Lucy’s long day of shopping, hiking, and meeting people, she deserves a relaxed evening! Always strive to end the lesson on a positive note, even if it means stopping early!
