Today we are celebrating the life of Miss Vickie, aka Vickie the Chickie!
Last Easter a few children absconded Vickie from their grandparents poultry farm.
She is now five month old and while her peers are being sent off for processing, Miss Vickie is still living the good life.
She is, however, substantially larger than the other chickens her age. They are mostly heritage breeds, and she’s a commercially bred chicken.
Cheers to Vickie!
And just like that, the 2024 Intake Season is over. In order to properly care for the current residents, we will be operating on a waitlist.
The Refuge welcomes the fantastic three! Jane, Cade, Charlotte, let the fun begin!
These little naughties are going to get me in trouble with the groundskeeper (my hubby). He draws the line when it comes to ducks in the pool. 🤪🦆🏖️
Due to predator challenges, we have installed several cameras. Look closely at the lower left corner of this video. In over 20 years, we have never seen Canada geese on our property so this was a surprise. I haven't seen this mamma goose or her goslings in person yet, but now I'll be on the lookout for her.

Guinea Hen Spa Day
Nothing like a relaxing dust bath to clear your head. 🤪
After several days of rain , this sun-kissed afternoon is perfect for “Donut and his Chicks” to soak up the rays.
Messy Hair, Don’t Care!!!
Today’s Puddle Dance brought to you by the Misty Meadow Ducks
Severe weather means party time for this group!
I love how a few of them stop walking halfway and start to swim through the puddles🤪
October means time to put the flock to work making our Halloween pumpkin, aka the CHUCK-O-LANTERN. The chickens get the process started and then the ducks clean it out and “refine the design “.
Bedtime at the Refuge is a bit noisy! The ducks love to escort me to the coop.
Now they are just showing off for the camera!!
This is such a fun age. Just last week they were fuzzy yellow ducklings. Now they are transforming into their adult plumage and I am guessing what type of duck they will be.
The bigger duckling and the four little ones are not related- they were dropped off by two separate owners from different locations. Yet it seems like they might all look alike.
Stay tuned as we watch them grow.
Look how gorgeous this little guy is becoming. His head feathers are going green, but look at that blue blade in his wings. Wow
It’s the first time I noticed this, but watch and listen carefully and you will see/ hear the large white Pekin stir up the muck with her feet, and then they all gobble up the yuckies she brings to the surface.
I was fascinated to watch this behavior.
