Spencer 🩶 who doesn’t love a beautiful dapple grey? I wish they stayed this way! If you didn’t know- grey is not technically a coat color! It’s a gene that progressively affects their coat and they become lighter with time. All greys are all born with a different coat color- any one be it black, bay, or chestnut… some are even hiding a pinto pattern under their grey! Most I see become flea bitten grey as they age but you also see some that become fluffy “white” polar bears. Many non horse people confuse white and grey but they are different and white (with pink skin) is incredibly rare and often connected to dangerous mutations, some fatal shortly after birth. Contrary to what a lot of owners worry about when clipping- the act of clipping does not cause grey a horse to “lighten faster” since hair cuts don’t affect genetics. I’m not that fancy as a body clipper I cannot break the genetic code. Any horse will have an immediate change in the appearance of their coat when clipped but just as hair tends to do its thing, it will grown and shed and grow and shed and do its thing. Please don’t avoid clipping your grey horse if they need it done for welfare reasons just to “ preserve their color”. Spencer is a beautiful young gelding that is on his way to warmer winter in Florida and got a full body clip for the occasion!
