As we move our updates to the Mostly Mutts main page tomorrow, we wanted to share the big strides Marina has made at Metro Re-Entry.
Marina was on a walk when her trainers found out she was afraid of stairs. This video shows a sped up version of how they got her comfortable with the stairs. Caleb was a big help. Sometimes it’s easier to conquer your fears when you’re so excited to play with your buddy! Way to go Marina!
Both dogs are adoptable.

Dexter chooses which dogs he likes and Paisley is happy he likes her because she is most comfortable with his size and energy level so far!
Metro has been so helpful in figuring out if a dog needs a playmate of a certain size and energy level. Some dogs just don’t know how to interact with other dogs so they need baby steps before fully coming out of their shell. Some dogs just have a play style they are comfortable with and need the right friend to get their needs met. We get updates on each dog as they get more and more comfortable.
Bebe is playful and energetic. She has enjoyed playing with some of the other dogs and all of her people.

Cora came to Mostly Mutts with heartworms. She has completed her treatment and heartworm free! You may notice the shaved spots on her lower back—this is the injection site and will grow back.
She is snuggly and lovable, prefers to be your only dog, and has recently graduated the training program.

In 2023, Mostly Mutts sent 58 dogs to Metro Re-Entry. 42 of those dogs were adopted. 33 dogs graduated from the training program.

A progression of group play from dogs who have already met. Sitting calmly, getting closer, and letting loose. You can tell who is the most excitable by whose leash gets dropped last 😉
One of the things our guys at Metro do is help figure out what kind of walking equipment is most helpful for the dog to set them up for success. If they are pulling or rowdy when walking on a leash, will changing them into a harness or gentle leader make a difference? Here is Melody in a gentle leader and Kaya in an EZ walk harness.
You’ve seen how bandanas can be used to signal that it’s time to train. Now check out how our Metro trainers have used sunglasses to help limit distractions when other dogs are outside during training. Plus, it’s another way to add fashion when your options are limited!

Sometimes it can be helpful to your dog to identify when it is in training mode. Some of the trainers at Metro do this by using a bandanna. It helps the pups know that when the bandanna is put on, they are in learning mode and when it comes out they are in play mode. We have Floyd and Dottie showing off their bandannas here!
Are you looking for a rugged, working man? Look no further! Conner is a dog of many skills and he works hard to show his appreciation to his trainers. Need some wood for the fire place? Conner is out there chopping wood before you even ask for another log. Are you in need of heavy lifting or street repairs? Just call on construction worker Conner.
Winona is a nature loving girl. She loves playing outside so much that wanted to dress up in costumes that are outdoorsy. She tried the butterfly, but that little hat was not for her 😂. She felt more comfortable being a flower child.
Alex is a dog who wears many hats. Do you need a rooster? He’s got you covered. Do you need a pirate? He is ready to be your matey. Do you need help with fire safety? Alex can help with that too!
…maybe do a reference check on his fire safety skills just to be extra cautious. But we can vouch for the rest!
Our mutts are good guys. They are here to fight crime and keep peace. Winona and Sunshine don’t mind sharing the title of Wonder Woman. Alex, I mean Robin, loves the company of both.

Our trainers at Metro get creative on a regular basis. They are great at finding solutions with limited resources. Amos is picky about how he likes to be touched. His trainer was able to bathe him, and clean his eyes. Cleaning his eyes was tricky so they used a donut toy he likes and moved it around to wipe his eyes. Mission accomplished and Amos was none the wiser. 🧼 🛁

Little Bernard was in a foster home where he was doing pretty good, but was not comfortable around strangers. He went to Metro to work on this. He took a little bit of time to get used to his new humans at Metro the first day. He has been working on getting comfortable around new people and he is making progress!

Mariah is growing up in prison. 😢 She has spent a lot of her puppy months at Metro. She is a sweet, very smart girl who is almost a year old. Mariah needs a strong leader, as she likes to be mischievous and test her boundaries from time to time. She loves to use her brain, so keeping her on her toes with a puzzle or “problem” to solve is a good way to keep her entertained and out of trouble. Here she is learning the difference between a brush and a toy.

Play date time featuring Jolee and Gertie: Jolee is dog friendly, but she can get distracted by everything else around her and lose interest in play. When she gets overwhelmed by too much activity or too many people, she prefers to not have playtime with another dog. It’s hard for her to stay focused on her playmate when she is trying to stay aware of everything new happening around her. Gertie picks and chooses who she likes for doggie friends. She has made a couple friends at Metro and is a good playmate for Jolee. Since 2004, Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue has been working to reduce the number of animals euthanized at local shelters in metro Atlanta. We work closely with animal control officers to save adoptable dogs that are often moments away from being put to sleep. Often, these dogs are sick and injured and require rehabilitation. Mostly Mutts provides housing, health care, training, and physical and emotional care to them until they can be placed in a new home
In August of 2018, The Georgia Department of Corrections opened its Metro Re-Entry Facility in Atlanta, the first transitional state prison for offenders slated for release within 18 months. ‘Returning citizens’ receive intensive counseling, vocational training and housing support so they will leave with two things: a job and a home.
In June of 2019, Metro Re-Entry reached out to Mostly Mutts about partnering together to start a dog training program…one of the most popular and requested programs! We immediately said yes and began the process.
The program is an innovative and progressive program that pairs ‘returning citizens’ with rescued dogs for mutual rehabilitation. Mostly Mutts trains and certifies the returning citizens and then pairs them with a rescued pup. Under 24/7 care from the inmates and guards, our Mutts get the extra time, care and love they so desperately need! In turn, the returning citizens are learning a marketable skill as well as empathy, responsibility and service to others.
