As Southeast Veterinary Cardiology gears up for a busy summer/fall 2021, we'll be intermittently posting important articles that help you practice the best medicine possible. Here's an excellent, (really) thorough review about heart murmurs in dogs & cats. Highly recommended read for every veterinarian.

SEVC is here to help primary care vets inside their own clinic when any murmurs (or arrhythmias too) are noted in their patients. A huge thank you to all the clinics utilizing SEVC already, looking forward to being able to help more in the future!

Veterinary cardiologists have been seeing these cases for a couple of years now, but this is a great reminder for pet owners to not believe the marketing hype of these boutique diets. It's true we don't know exactly what is causing the heart changes in the diets, but Dr. Pogue has seen pets pass away from this condition (including Bailey mentioned in the story). If you are worried about the diet or need dietary recommendations, please talk with your primary care veterinarian. If your vet is worried about heart disease, consider having an echocardiogram performed by SEVC or your local cardiologist.

Here's a link to the June 2019 FDA report mentioned in the story:

Local dogs are dying and veterinarians think it has something to do with what we’re feeding our pets.
