Make sure to get an airline-approved pet carrier (preferably a soft-sided one) - dimensions usually must be less than 18” x 11” x 11”.   2. Check with your airline for their max. allowed pet weight (typically 25 lbs or less).   3. Reserve a pet carrier ticket at least 48 hours before your flight, but preferably 1 week in advance to make sure there’s enough space on the plane.   4. You don’t need any health documentation for domestic flights, but for international travel, all countries require proof of rabies vaccination and many also require a health certificate from your vet.   5. Pack treats, your pet’s favorite toys, a portable pet water bottle, and a portable litter box (for cats) for 3hr+ flights.  6. All airlines allow 1 pet per passenger or 2 kittens younger than 6 months of age, except for Spirit airlines which allows 2 adult cats per carrier. I started Bear young, who has 2 flights under his belt already.Hopefully, more to come this year 🧳 So yes you can call me an expert on flying with dogs! Here are my best tips for flying with your dog: ➡️Have your dog practice being in their closed-off carrier before your flight. This could look like traveling to a dog-friendly store in a car while your dog is closed off in the carrier. It’ll give them a chance to understand the carrier is a safe space while there are loud noises around. ➡️Before departing for the airport, walk your dog + do enrichment activities to tire your dog mentally + physically. ➡️Some airlines or agents will ask you to show that your dog can comfortably fit in the carrier. This may look like opening the carrier or having your dog turn in the carrier. Practice this before. ➡️Manage your anxiety, because your dog is going to feed off it. ➡️Rules for flying with a dog change all the time. Re-check rules before booking a flight and departure day. ➡️If you’re flying with a service dog, keep two printed copies of your DOT form with you as agents will ask to see it & may keep it.
