Today we, along with our vet team, made the hardest decision to let sweet Strawberry Shortcake go.
We knew when we saved her that she would have lots of medical needs. We were so excited to get her through that and on to her new life. We gave her a new name and a loving foster home, but we quickly realized that our girl had a very poor quality of life due to cognitive issues. We hoped maybe it was just anxiety or being in a new place, but unfortunately they did not improve. Her foster family worried that she was in pain and unable to understand that sheās finally safe. Add in the numerous procedures she still had ahead of her, and it just didnāt seem humane or kind. When making these decisions, we always do our best to put the dogās well being before our own feelings. The feel good thing to do would have been to go blindly full force ahead with all of the medical plans and āfixā everything that we could while ignoring what we saw. But we all knew that wasnāt fair. When pulling seniors, especially super seniors like Strawberry Shortcake, this is sometimes the reality.
Strawberry Shortcake experienced so much love in her final days, whether she knew it or not. She had a whole community of people who wanted the very best for her and would have done anything to help her.
To all who donated to her care, thank you ā¤ļø Because of you we were able to take her in and get her seen by our vet immediately. Do X-rays, bloodwork, ultrasounds and exams to come up with a plan. She was started on medicines to hopefully get her to a point where she could have her surgeries. We are so heartbroken that it didnāt work out the way we planned š But grateful that we had the opportunity to love her and try.
In rescue we have a tradition of sending sky pictures when we lose one of our own. We know her foster family is going through such a hard time right now, and would love to see your sky pictures in honor of their foster girl š
