Reveille "Ellie": 15.1hh bay grade mare. Jumper or lower level eventer project for a confident intermediate, advanced teen or small adult on a budget! Started slowly over fences and has had a full restart on the flat as well as ground work and trailer loading. Stands for farrier, straight tie or cross ties, clips and bathes. Ellie was purchased as a kids horse for a beginner but she really wants a consistent job and a leader to bring her along. Can be a spur ride in the canter, steady level headed learner undersaddle. Praying for the Texas Panhandle 🙏
It is not often that words escape us, but this is one of those rare times where nothing feels adequate. The fires in the Panhandle have been and continue to be beyond devastating. Our family, friends and neighbors have been directly impacted, losing horses, cattle, feed, equipment, buildings, homes and livelihoods in the blink of an eye. Knowing that your livestock is helpless against these raging fires and there is nothing you can do to stop it is the epitome of trauma and torture for a rancher, and that has been happening every minute of the day for the past four days. We do not wish this kind of experience on anyone.
Please pray for the families and communities impacted, share their stories and support how and where you feel led to do so. There are multiple, trusted groups organizing funds and coordinating feed donations, which we have included below. This is a time to lift up our friends and neighbors in whatever way we can, and do what rural America does best - come together.

“She’s such a mare!” - said about the tail swishing, ear pinning mare who is kicking out at leg because she doesn’t want to go forward.
“Oh my god, look at her mare face!” - someone laughs at the mare who is ear pinning and snaking her head at those passing by her stall, threatening to bite.
“Thats definitely a mare!” A commenter jokes on a video of a horse who tries to kick and bite while doing up the girth.
The amount of internalized misogyny that we project onto mares is really sad, especially when so many of those doing it also have uteruses and likely understand the experience of having similar hormones and know what it’s like to cycle.
I’m not always feeling my best. Sometimes I have cramps that make me uncomfortable enough that work becomes harder.
The difference is that I have the autonomy to go and take pain killers, take a sick day or at least articulate my pain to those around me so they can understand why I’m having a harder time.
When mares attempt to do that, we brush off their feelings and blame their gender, reducing their discomfort to the fact that they’re a female.
When geldings offer the same behaviours, it is never blamed on their s*x.
Did you know that in the studies they have done on horse s*xes and whether there is actually a notable difference between mares and geldings, mares actually tested higher for having more amiable behaviours?
Overall, mares and geldings proved to be quite similar with very marginal differences, though.
Despite being an industry made up of an abundance of participants who know what it’s like to have a uterus, we still remain extremely discriminatory to mares, despite the fact that we should understand their experience better because of our similarities.
I, too, used to buy into the mare stereotype and “didn’t like” mares.
Now, I have more mares than geldings.
They’re dependable, they’re friendly, they’re brave, they’re sweet and they’re kind.
And if they ever deviate from this norm, it’s my job to explore why.
My OTTB mare, when she arrived to me, was the stereotypical mare.
She would try to kick me and bite me when I brushed her.
She was moody and disagreeable.
She was also riddled with stomach ulcers and extremely body sore from the racetrack, having been trained in an elevator bit and having substantial poll discomfort because of it.
Want to know what happened when I addressed this?
She became one of my sweetest and most easy to handle horses who is so incredibly consistent in her behaviour that she tends to be more dependable than a lot of my geldings.
Anyone who is perpetually running into mares who are “b*tchy” should work to consider what it is in their training and care program that is making them that way.
The fault is ours, not the entire gender category of mares.
This bias against mares and how many of their attempts to communicate their discomfort are simply attributed to their s*x is archaic and embarrassing.
It serves no one and it does mares a massive disservice while perpetuating the similar undertones of misogyny that are so harmful to women and other uterus having people.

He was with a beginner family for over a year before coming to us to find a family that will be able to focus on him and show him more daily attention which he will soak up like a sponge! He has had kids of all ages on him and is a babysitter. Saddle up and hit the trails play around in the pasture or pop the little family members on who want to have fun during visits. He is 100% your guy. We have used him in lessons and started him over small jumps. Adults who act like kids are not his favorite but he is extremely tolerant and just wants a family of his own, would also make a fantastic lesson horse for a program with lots of kids! Takes mid 🥕🥕🥕🥕 to make him your own forever or low 🥕🥕🥕🥕/yr. Located in Rockwall, Tx

"Butter" (Moses on the Mountaintop) is a pretty pale palomino barrel/ pole gelding, 4 years old, standing 14.2 hh. APBA registered for color only. My 10 year old daughter was using him for playdays, but she's wanting to get more into ranch versatility and roping, and this guy is all GO, so he's not what she needs. My daughter is not an aggressive competitor, and he was running 19s-22s with her with no pushing at all. A teenager who was more proactive was riding him previously and getting upper 17s/ low 18s with minimal pushing, so he has much more potential. He doesn't have any alleyway issues, loads, stands tied. Has a lot of go, so not for an inexperienced kid, etc. She found a ranch horse she really wants, so VERY motivated to move quickly. Our trainer Monica Heck personally previously owned, put some training into this little guy and absolutely loved him, will be a super cool little play day "hony". He's smart, quick, and flashy.
