The City of Austin will soon require people to get microchips for their pets. The move is part of a city effort to keep pets out of shelters. https://l8r.it/CGDh

War dogs? Not so much! 🤭

1941 - Coast Guard “training” a Great Dane

Due to the size and weight of a Great Dane the United States Military wanted to train them as working dogs in World War II.

The training program was so unsuccessful that it drove a dog training Sergeant to tears when he repeatedly tried to get a Great Dane to jump over an obstacle, the playful Great Dane would run up to the obstacle, grab the entire structure in his teeth and then bring it back to the Sergeant and place it at his feet wanting to play.

It was shortly after that the United States Military gave up training Great Danes for war.

This was a wonderful chat to be witness to and see the industry of dog training grow in a respectful and forward thinking manner.
If you are interested in the deeper world and culture of dog training or thinking of becoming a dog trainer yourself, this was a solid conversation to start on the right path to expose yourself to all ideas/tools/methods and know there is a place for all at some point in time for the dog and pet parent in front of you.
It’s is not to teach you how to use the tools, it’s to be part of the greater conversation to move this industry forward and hopefully shine through the social media influencers that make great videos but skill level is subpar. On BOTH sides of the spectrum.

I am well versed in all the different tools and methods and use a variety of training tools (slip leads, treats, marker systems, electronic collars, and many more) so that I can help the dog to the best of my abilities. Seems only fair to know all paths to helping our dogs live better lives and our families live harmoniously with dogs in our homes.

Each client is unique and we should have all the tools in our tool box to help.

The full chat is on Jo-Rosie, Archie the Super Pit & Co. page and though it is long, it’s educational and refreshing.

Take homes notes from The “Chat”

For me there was more moments we were all nodding and agreeing than disagreeing and that was a ‘proof of concept’ in and of itself

- We all agreed that good trainers use the science to better understand their how their methods work but don’t base their practice on the science
- We all agreed that ethics are subjective and not this fínate thing, they are also ever in flux for all of us. And it should stay that way.
- We all agreed that a goal should be appropriate, achievable and that the client, the dog and the public have to be considered but in most cases one has to make sacrifices
- We all agreed that how long something took was part of an ethical consideration
- We all agreed client should be educated about all the options as objectively as possible and then should be allowed to decide what training they would like
- As such we all agreed that all trainers should be taught about all types of training but that mostly trainers that used labels tended to have major gaps in their education on one side or the other and that +r type trainers need to understand balanced methods and that balanced trainers should be experts in +r methods
- None of us believed that regulation would happen any time soon but all of us felt as though something needed to happen to prevent extremists and poor training on both sides
- We all agreed that catagorising trainers based on the equipment they use wasn’t sophisticated or beneficial for owners
- We agreed that an educational emphasis should be put on things like body language and identifying what recovery looks like. That way owners will be able to identify their dogs affect, understand what’s appropriate and choose training that has the dog’s emotional welfare considered
- We didn’t all agree that using tools was necessary but we did all agree that words like aversive, painful and scary weren’t really useful or definable
- We all agreed that dogs needed to be controlled and that dogs thrived with clear boundaries, structure and an understanding of ‘obligation’

We covered so so much more in, the first of I hope, many more mixed method conversations which you can find on my page x enjoy

In case you are able to take a few mornings and help out Austin shelter dogs…

* This is just a courtesy post from The Long Stay Project trying to help recruit some volunteers. You 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 contact APA and/or visit https://www.austinpetsalive.org/volunteer to see what’s needed from you BEFORE you walk dogs.

Volunteers can start taking dogs to yards at 7am and off campus at 8am. By 8am, almost every dog has waited 12 hours for an outing and for many closer to 14-15 hours.

It seems the most needed hours are mornings 7am-10am and evenings 4pm-8pm but any time is of course welcomed. Even if you only have an hour to spare, that could be a few dogs getting a break that otherwise wouldn’t without you! 💙
