E.A. McIlhenny found alligators so fascinating he built alligator pens in Jungle Gardens to study the enormous reptiles. You can still see these circular pens near the Bird City observation deck. The largest alligator ever recorded in the U.S. was taken by E.A. McIlhenny near Avery Island. It measured 19 feet and 2 inches. Take a slow drive through Jungle Gardens to spot our friends and be sure to stop by the gift to view another trophy alligator, Monsurat!

Louisiana oaks are perhaps unlike any other live oaks along the Gulf Coast. Unlike most other oaks, live oaks are evergreen and not deciduous. Jungle Gardens is home to many immense, centuries-old oaks. Some are estimated to be 400 years old. Come enjoy the rest of summer soaking in these beauties!

Experience the natural beauty and tranquility of Jungle Gardens - a 170-acre semitropical garden that stretches along Bayou Petite Anse on Avery Island. Naturalists, bird watchers and visitors from around the world will enjoy the gently rolling landscape, botanical treasures and abundant wildlife.

Attractions range from beautiful flowers to birds to Buddha (a magnificent centuries-old statue on the grounds). In season, visitors can see azaleas, camellias and colorful bamboo - as well as alligators, deer and the thousands of snowy egrets that nest in Bird City. It’s a nature lover’s dream that’s open to tourists every day of the year.
