It’s perfectly ok to tell people “NO, you can’t pet my dog.” Your dog’s safety, personal space and mindset matter more than a random stranger in a store, on a street or at a park.

This family has made me cry not once but twice now with their kind words 🥹

I got into to this because I love dogs and I want to help people navigate life with their four legged companions. Making real connections with them is truly priceless and makes what I do worth it every minute of every day.

Thank you!

Turning into “place” champions.

Place is going to be SUPER important for Sir Charlie. His family will be welcoming a new baby in February so that means things will be getting a little chaotic in his house as he already has two little other humans around.

Jolene needs to learn to do nothing and relax. Below is her about to fall asleep on her place bed after a training session.

These two are off to a great start 🖤🐾

Welcome little Jolene!! This little girl is here for two weeks for basic obedience, learning how to exist around other dogs, walk nicely on leash and off leash e collar training.

I’ve been doing private lessons with her family since she was a teeny tiny little one. They want to refine some of the ground work we have been doing and get her off leash trained 🖤🐾

Welcome Charlie! Charlie is spending two weeks with me for more refining of his basic obedience, off leash training and learning how to control his impulses especially when people come to the door. He’s got that Golden Retriever “I LOOOOOOOVE EVERYONE! Must jump up to say hello!” I can’t wait to see how he progresses 🐾🖤

Fire works will be going off tonight.

That means an influx of “my dog got scared of the fire works and escaped our yard”.

If you have a dog that is known to be afraid of fireworks:

-potty them before the fireworks may start going off. If you have to potty them later on, do so with you going outside and having them on a leash with that in your hand. Doing this will prevent any escapes.
-check gate latches, walk your fence lines
-contain your dog to an area where they will feel safe whether it’s a dog crate, next to you or in a room.
-provide enrichment for them such as a bully stick to chew on, a kong filled with frozen peanut butter.
-if your dog take meds for these things, be sure to give it in a way that it’s already in effect before the fireworks start.
-if you have a known escape artist and your house will be the spot for a party this evening, contain your dog to a crate or a room where they cannot escape. Doors will be opening and closing. Prevention is key. If your dog can’t be contained, put a leash on the dog while he or she is out in the house. They can’t escape if they are tethered to someone.

I hope you all and your pets have a safe and happy New Year 🖤🐾

Client Moose learning the ways of “place” while mom cooks dinner.

There is never any reason your dog needs to be in your kitchen or cooking area while you’re cooking. They can get under foot and if you have anything hot in your hands…well they become a tripping hazard and one or both of you end up hurt.

Nice work Moose and his owner putting in the time for training.

They are saying nothing but true things in this post.

According to the SPCA and Humane Society, in the next 4-8 weeks, you'll all be seeing the "We need to re-home our pet..." posts. These are the people who went ahead and purchased puppies & kittens as Christmas gifts who are suddenly allergic, moving, having a baby, don't have time, their kids won't take care of it, didn't think they'd get so big, blah, blah, blah. Problem is, almost 90% of unwanted pets, sadly end up in kill shelters.

Allow me to break it down for you.

You didn't know you had an allergy? Oops. Don't let the pet suffer, buy some allergy medicine, if you love your pet, it's absolutely worth a shot.

You're moving? What city are you moving to that doesn't allow dogs? Bullsh*tville? You have a responsibility to your living, breathing family member to plan ahead to find a house, apartment or condo that will ALLOW your family member. Period.

Oh, you had no idea you were due to have a baby in 2 months? Interesting. Get a dog trainer if you're housing a breed you fear might become an issue. It's also worth a shot.

Don't have time for ONE 15 minute walk, or to have a dog just sit next to you while you're home? Really? So they're better off in a shelter than waiting in your house for you to get home? Ok, perhaps get another pet to keep them company or look for a local dog-sitter.

Oh, you mean your 5 year old didn't step up to the plate to feed, walk and scoop p**p?
And this surprised you?
I guess it's time for YOU to step up and model responsibility for your child.

Wrong size? Not cute as an adult? Not quite the personality you expected? Look in a mirror, how did you turn out?
Should we send you back?

Buddy is a very special boy 🥰

I worked with him and his owners back when I worked at a training facility. He was just a young pup and his owners were eager to learn and train him.

After I left the training facility I went to start my own business and Buddy’s owners found me on Facebook and we reconnected. So very grateful that we did! 🖤🐾

Kate LaMantia your boy will always have a place here in our home!

A very wise and experienced (50 years handing and training dogs) trainer sharing another good post!

I'm not trying to slag on this creator, which is why I obstructed the contact information and as much of the identifying imagery as possible.

I gotta say, though, I really detest this mentality that paints all dogs as lemon-brains, incapable of learning self- control.

It's not true.

It's not true that you "have tried everything!"

It's not true that Greyhounds can't learn to sit or to recall.

It's not true that herding breeds can't learn not to 'herd' the kids.

It's not true that your Cane Corso will never stop barking at the neighbors.

If you were foolish enough to add a JRT to a home with small animals without thinking that through, you sorta get what you deserve. Still, it is possible to own both successfully. You just have to want it bad enough.

Your dog can absolutely learn to control its impulses.

What *is* true is the singular lack of commitment most people have to get the dog to that point.

Between not committing to changing, not putting forth the effort to change, and relinquishing any attempt to the belief that dogs can not be taught to govern their actions is the same mentality that ultimately strips our rights as owners to live with our dogs in meaningful ways.

It is so easy to lower standards because the solution looks like work and smells like effort, when every time we do that, it diminishes the value dogs bring to our lives.

Instead of breeding away from working qualities because people want the look of a Shepherd, but not the drive of a Shepherd, or Terrier, or Hound or other working breed, select a suitable breed for your lifestyle.

If you choose a breed with a working history, remember that even though genetically that dog may not have the same degree of drive as a working counterpart, there are enough genetic remnants to make life interesting for you, if you cared enough about the breed to research it's behavior tendencies.

There are consequences for every action. Choosing the wrong dog, choosing the wrong candidate for your lifestyle once you settle on a breed, not making an effort to help that dog succeed, isn't a *dog* problem. It's an owner problem.

Instead of getting frustrated at an animal for your bad choices, you can make it work when you select a trainer who understands how to develop drive, channel drive, redirect drive, focus drive, or, if necessary, suppress drive.

Stop blaming the dog. Stop listening to people who make these vague generalities based on an incomplete model of untrained - or poorly trained dogs.

If your dog is do***ng like it's never dogged before, maybe it's time to look for someone to help you understand how to fit that square peg into that round hole.

The only thing separating you from the dog you want and the dog you have is TRAINING.

When you are ready, we are here.

The first photo is a recent update from Lincoln’s owner. I LOVE these kinds of updates months after training is over.

Lincoln and his owners hired me shortly after bringing him home. We did private lessons and later moved to e collar training for off leash freedom.

This family is an example of getting out what you put into the training. I had stressed the importance of utilizing a “place” command from very early on and the result is a calm dog in the midst of chaos especially around the holidays.

I couldn’t be more proud of them and I’m truly Thankful they picked me to help them with their now well behaved boy!

If you hear me say any of this to you as my client, please know it comes from my heart. It may make you uncomfortable and go against what we now see dogs as….furbabies that aren’t being given the respect they need. It may sound militant but by god the alternative is way worse than anything you will ever feel. It will be the dog that pays as well as your child. The dog is at risk now for being euthanized or re-homed. PREVENTION IS KEY. Listen to your dog trainers. DOGS DO NOT “SNAP” out no where.

“Everyone thinks being a dog behaviourist is a dream job working with dogs but I have to deal with child bites and injuries every week and it’s always upsetting and highly emotional!! The only way to deal with this is to PREVENT!
And if you need to hear it here’s your reminder!
Dogs are NOT a furbaby
Dogs are NOT thrilled for the arrival of your baby
Dogs are NOT protecting your baby
Dogs are NOT “kissing” your child
Dogs are an ANIMAL
Dogs are an apex predator in your home!

A truly tragic and horrific case to read.
A seven month old baby girl killed by the family pet in a hideous incident in their home.
The little one leant on to the dog as she was toddling and was bitten on the neck and very sadly died. A stark reminder of how fast dogs can turn, How quickly something can escalate and how fatal one bite can be.

A dog will correct other dog’s behaviour with a snap or bite and in an agitated state of mind will lash out before investigating the situation. The Malinois was fixated on a bag when the baby touched him, both parents were in the vicinity and present when the dog bit.

Owners who have asked for advice with young babies around dogs know I am incredibly strict and have a 0 tolerance for babies/toddlers/young children being next to, touching, climbing on, leaning on, sitting with or “petting” a dog and this is the worst case example of exactly why I am so adamant about it!
Dogs shouldn’t have any access to young children who are crawling for exactly this reason! It’s so fast!! And in this case the dog had been seen by behaviourists for “dominating” behaviour in the months before the incident.
I would have absolutely tied the owner down to ensuring the dog and baby were never in the room together whether or not the parents were present for exactly this reason so maybe some owners out there who think I’ve been too harsh with rules around babies will understand why now!!
“Oh we never leave them alone together” is absolutely NOT good enough!!!! The parents were right next to the dog and baby!! Please remember this!!

Everyone thinks being a dog behaviourist is a dream job working with dogs but I have to deal with child bites and injuries every week and it’s always upsetting and highly emotional!! The only way to deal with this is to PREVENT!

Please no hate or comments about the parents in this case they have suffered enough and I hope this post may just save another child from injury!

I’ve got some clients about to welcome a new puppy into their home as well as some about to have a baby while having a young adolescent dog.

This post is for you.

“Slow introductions and minimal excitement around a new puppy is key. Parents need to take the leading role with the pup and children and micro manage every aspect without falling into feeling “guilty” about not allowing much contact or being pushed into what children want to be able to do with the pup! Hope this helps!”
