"HONEY BEE LUNCH BREAK"
If you know me, you know I love watching the honey bees and also love taking photos and short videos of them going about their normal activities. They truely fascinate me! 🐝
This is a short video I took showing a worker honey bee that was out foraging when she found my fine mesh screen that I had just used to strain out wax as it came out of my honey extractor.
She's uses her proboscis, which is like a straw to draw up liquids like honey, nectar, water ect. She then takes it back to the hive where she transfers it to other worker bees in a process called trophallaxis.
If you looking closely, you can actually see the honey flowing through her proboscis as she drinks up every minute drop.

I had a great time at both Hookstown Fair and Big K**b Grange Fair the last two weeks.
I was extremely fortunate to win several ribbons for our Honey, Beeswax and Maple Syrup!
I volunteered several days at the Beaver Valley Area Beekeepers Association display in the Big K**b Grange Hall, talking to many of the folks that stopped by to ask about the honey bees and beekeeping. I truely enjoyed answering everyones questions and hope I had the chance to say hello.

SPRING HONEY IS NOW AVAILABLE!!!!!

We finally had the chance to extract some spring honey.

The weather made it tough for the bees to bring in the nectar but they worked hard the past few weeks and made enough extra honey that we could pull some off.

Spring honey extraction day!

This spring has been slow for my bees with all the on and off rain during the honey flow but we are getting to pull a little bit.

"Wash Boarding" This is an interesting act the honey bees perform at times. This hive was doing this out off all my hives the other day. No one really knows why the honey bees do this, but some think its an act of cleaning. Some think they are leaving their pheromones (bee scent) The girls move back an forth, usually spaced equally in lines, with their rear legs holding in place and rapidly dragging their front legs across the surface. They also use their mandibles (the jaws of a honey bee), which bite, chew, shape wax, ect. During wash boarding they seem to be trying to scratch or biting the surface.
It is very interesting!

This colony is making some really good looking brood frames. 1st pic...Capped brood with a ring of pollen, then capped honey. 2nd pic...capped brood, new eggs, pollen and capped honey. 3rd pic... a great queen with her attendents. They like their Apimaye Hive.

The ramp up to Honey season has started so before I run out of time I decided to make an observation display hive so I can take honey bees with me on talks for everyone to see them up close. Figured if I was going to cut all the wood for one I may as well build three. Happy with the results.
Keep watching for updates on when spring honey will bee available!
Hopefully it will bee an amazzzing year.
