We had such a fun, HOT month of July, and ready to get back to our back-to-school lesson schedule! 🩵

Availability becomes a lot more limited when the school year starts, so if you’ve been wanting to get scheduled, now’s the time! 🙌🏻

One of my main questions I get asked is “How often does my horse need treatment?” And there is no cookie cutter answer as every horse is case by case. However, the more you use it the better your results will be. If this is something you are interested in whether it be an injury or just general maintenance please do not hesitate to reach out 🫶🏼

Did you know that on a 5-hour trip, your horse could lose over 30 pounds…
😳

Research from UC Davis has shown that horses can lose 0.45 - 0.55% of total body weight, equating to 4.95-6.05 lbs per hour (Dr. Desmond Leadon, 2013).

And to top off the STRESS, another study found that the energy expended during 30 minutes of walking is similar to that during 30 minutes of TRANSPORT, even when the horses are standing still their muscles are still hard at work.

(Doherty, Booth, Waran, Salthouse, & Cuddeford, 1997).

Here are some tips to help your equine athlete:

1. Provide adequate rest time after hauling (1 day for hauls between 6 and 12 hours, and 2 to 3 days for trips over 12 hours).

2. Stop frequently to provide water, every 2-4 hours.

3. Keep your horse’s respiratory system healthy by ensuring the trailer is clean and well-ventilated.

4. Allow horses as much freedom of movement of their heads as possible to avoid compromising lung clearance mechanisms and shipping fever.

5.Ensure horses eat during long journeys; keep hay in front of them. ( if your horse is prone to allergies, think about soaking their hay)

6.Consider feeding alfalfa, which contains a high calcium content and acts like a natural antacid for horses.

7. Start ulcer guard 48 hours before hauling. To prevent and protect your horse from ulcers.

8.Use Forerunner paste before hauling to aid the digestive system.

9.Take hay, grain, and supplements with you to prevent disruption to the digestive system.

10.Clean out water buckets and bring water from home in case the horse is picky.

11. Standing wraps, shipping boots, Back on track boots & soft rides can be used for extra support for your horses legs. If your horse is accustomed to wearing them. (If weather is too hot, it’s advised not to use BOT boots)

12.Learn how to monitor vital signs to keep track of your horse's health during travel and provide necessary information to a veterinarian if needed.( Learn your horses base temperature, how much do they eat or drink in a day ect.)

13. Consider adding ImmPACT by Myristol to boost your horses immune system!
