Guess the Breed
If you guess the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, you were CORRECT!
The Cavalier King Charles has been winning over hearts since as early as the 17th century. Named after King Charles II, this breed was a favorite amongst the royal family so much so, that King Charles issued a royal decree that stated the dogs should be allowed in all public places.
However, they nearly became extinct when King William III and Queen Mary I took over the UK, as the Queen much preferred pugs over the spaniels.
To save the breed from extinction, the Cavalier was corss bred with the queen's favored pug breed. Nearly 230 years later, American breeders started the process of reproducing the original 17th century looks of the Cavalier.
This breed us ranked 44th in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, listing then as having "average" intelligence in working or obedience. While that number may seem small, 131 breeds were tested and ranked... Cavaliers are successful in obedience and agility. Their natural instinct to chase and hunt can get them into some trouble but their sweet, gentle nature makes them wonderful therapy dogs. Just don't count on them to be good guard dogs- Cavaliers have a tendancy to regard all strangers as friends.
Upkeep and care for these snuggle bugs can be a little tiring when it comes to grooming.
They require regular bathing, brushing and sometimes even a good hair cut in some areas. Exercise needs can be met in a small yard or a daily walk around the neighborhood.

Guess the Breed REVEAL!
If you guessed the Irish Wolfhound, you were CORRECT!
The earliest record of an Irish Wolfhound dates back to 391 AD in a letter from a Roman consul to his brother. These "wolfdogs of Ireland" were supposedly given to Roman consuls as well as European kings, shahs of Persia, and other world leaders. According to legends, Cormac Mac Airt, of of the High Kings of Ireland, had an army of 300 hounds. They were highly coveted becasue they were excellent hunters, guardians, and companions.
Origianlly bred to hunt boar, deer, elk and wolves, this breed nearly became extinct as they seemingly were over hunting and the nunmbers of those animals began to decrease. Captain George A. Graham set out on a mission to revive the breed in the mid-1800s. He found the few remaining Irish Wolfhounds in the country and crossed the dogs he could find with the Scottish Deerhounds, helping to bring the population back to life!
Now, these gentle giants may not make the best guardian dogs because of their suspicious nature, they sure have made their mark. Despite their size, they are calm and relaxed by nature and are considered to be a good family dog.

Guess the Breed Reveal
If you guessed the Sealyham Terrier, you were CORRECT!
The Sealyham was developed in Wales by John Tucker-Edwards who lived on an estate called Sealyham and thus names the breed after his estate. Experts believe that he used the Wire Fox Terrier, the West Highland Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the now extinct English White Terrier to create this low riding breed. That is quite the mix right? Tucker-Edwards was clearly going after the smaller, mid-size breeds as the intention of the breed is to hunt small game such as pheasants and rabbits.
When creating this breed, Tucker-Edwards also valued a white coat, as it ensured that his dogs would stand out against the gray and brown colors of the area in which he was hunting. Today, the white coat is the only color in the breed standard, however lemon, tan or badger colored markings on the head and ears are allowed.
Newly appointed Best in Show at the 2023 AKC National Dog show, this breed is also popular with past Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis and Alfred Hitchcock who had two Sealyham's appear in the 1963 film "The Bird".

If you guesses the German Shepherd Dog, you were CORRECT!
The German Shepherd descends from the family of German herding dogs bred by Max von Stephanitz, a captain of the German Calvary. Originally tasked with watching over flocks of sheep and herding them from field to field, the German Shepherd has lightening fast reflexes. They can reach up to 32 miles per hour at a full sprint!
This breed has varied over time depending on where you live. American breeders developed breed standards that focus on body shape and elegant movements that make the shepherd more desirable as performance and show dogs. In Europe, breeders still tend to follow the standards that were created by Max. these standards focus more on health, temperment and agility. There are 11 recognized colors of German Shepherd.

If you guesses the Labrador Retriever, you were CORRECT!
The Labrador Retreiver is the traditional waterdog of Newfoundland where they woerked as duck retrievers. The breed was brought to the UK in the 19th century by English nobels who set out to refine and standardize the breed.
Labs are purpose-bred hunting dogs, meaning they can work in a variety of settings including waterfowl hunting and game hunting Being that they LOVE water and were even said to be bred for just that, you will likely see them on a waterfowl hunt. Their thick tail, often called an otter tail is used as a rudder while their wenbed feet help them swim at a reasonable speed. Good thing they have that thick waterproof coat too!

If you guessed the Beagle, you were CORRECT!
The name "Beagle" is thought to come from the French work "begueule" which means "gaped throat". They can make 3 different sounds- a standard bark, a yodel-like sound called a bay and a howl.
Descenants from hounds that were used in packs by hunters on foot in England, Wales, and France, they were bred to track small game such as rabbit and foxes. It is no surprise that this trait can lead them astray during outdoor walks.
One physical feature that does help reduce distractions is their ears! The long floppy ear helps our beloved Beagles concentrate and funnel scents toward their nose. When tracking, their ears help keep out long distance sounds.

If you guessed the Golden Retriever, you were CORRECT!
The Golden Retriever lineage dates back to the 1800s in Scotland. Bred by Lord Tweedmouth in 1864, they were developed for retrieval of wildfowl, both land and water. It wasn't until 1925 that the AKC officially recognized Golden's as a breed.
If you know anything about the breed, you know they are far from being couch potatoes. Golden Retrievers need lots of exercise both physically and mentally such as playing fetch, long walks, agility, and food motivated puzzles.
This hardworking breed is used for everything from hunting to rescue and service dog work but best of all, they are wonderful, loyal and devoted companions.

Welcome back to Fun Fact Friday!
So, Fido just got out of a bath and is feeling GREAT! And now, he's running around the house like a maniac. He's got the zoomies!!! But what exactly ARE the zoomies?
The proper name is "Frenetic Random Activity Periods" or FRAPs. They are usually caused by a build-up of excess energy which is then released in one short burst.
While they are caused by that built up energy, you can often expect your four-legged friend to release their enery just before bed, after a bath, after eating, and even during a training session.
Don't be alarmed when you witness these crazy spurts. They are totally normal!
Just be mindful of the areas in which they are taking place and redirect your pet to a safer, space such as outside to the grass or to carpet to avoid excessive sliding.
