12:13PM 1/17/25 - It appears the technical difficulties continue….

NOTE: this is the full update with all the details. HOWEVER, the graphic that is supposed to be the first call for Sunday, for some reason loaded in completely wrong. So, I’ve attached the correct one to this post. Again, the one in the article is incorrect.

10:39AM 1/17/24 - Another round of snow will make its way into our area on Sunday with a few inches of accumulation possible.

In total, a widespread 2-4” is expected for most areas with isolated higher amounts, and a coating-2” closer to the bay and the route 50 corridor. This could lead to travel impacts on Sunday as well as Monday.

A full, detailed forecast with timing and details on the uncertainties will be posted by 12pm on our website so be sure to check that out!

5:20PM 1/16/25 - Moderate to heavy snow showers will impact parts of Washington, Frederick, Howard, and Montgomery counties over the next 2 hours, and may clip parts of southern Carroll county as well.

In these snow showers, low visibility is possible along with a quick dusting to half inch of accumulation. Given the setting sun and below freezing temps, some roads could have a few slick spots so please use caution if traveling this evening.

1:44PM 1/16/25 - Light snow is falling in some places across the area this afternoon, and will continue to do so off and on through the evening. In isolated areas, as much as a half inch of snow could accumulate but like we mentioned yesterday, little to no impact is expected.

Then our attention turns to Sunday where there is an increasing signal for light accumulating snow across most of the area. Right now, there is still a great deal of variance between the 3 major long range models (GFS, EURO, GEM). But we have come up with 3 potential scenarios we could see happening on Sunday.

Scenario A (50% chance): Low pressure tracks well off shore but close enough to bring a light accumulating snow event to the entire area. Accumulations would be less than 3” in this scenario. This is the most likely scenario as of right now.

Scenario B (30% chance): Low pressure tracks near the coast bringing moderate accumulations for most of the area with lighter accumulation to west central MD. More than 3” could accumulate in some areas if this came to fruition.

Scenario C (20% chance): The low pressure tracks right along or just inland of the coast bringing a wintry mix to areas along and east of Rt.27, with moderate snow to the NW of there with potential for 3+” of accumulation in the moderate snow area, and less than 3” elsewhere.

It’s too early to talk about exactly how much will accumulate if any at all. Temperatures look to hover right around freezing so that will complicate the forecast as well as the exact track and strength of the storm system. We will know more coming up on Friday so be sure to stay tuned.

Greetings,

As most of you are aware, we will be dealing with extremely cold temps and wind chills next week. We also know that many of you do not enjoy such temps and winds.

So, we will be making a few calls and calling in a few favors to see if we can get those temps and winds moderated a bit. (No guarantees. But we do have a few low friends in high places.)

Executive Director,

7:59PM 1/15/25 - We have a couple winter related topics to talk about tonight. Here they are in order:

THURSDAY: A clipper system will move through on Thursday bringing off and on light snow showers to parts of the area (mainly northern MD). It’s not going to snow everywhere, but in areas where it does snow, temps likely will be low enough to support light accumulations of less than 1”. Most if not all of this would be on grassy and elevated surfaces, however we cannot rule out an isolated slick spot on roadways if a heavier burst of snow occurs. The NWS has issued a “Potential Winter Commuting Hazards Statement” for northern and north central MD for the evening commute. Snow would be most likely between 11am and 8pm, but again it won’t snow that entire time and not everyone will see snow. NWS accumulation graphic attached.

SUNDAY: An area of low pressure looks to pass south of our area off the coast. Depending on the track, it could bring a period of light accumulating snow to most of the area (potential for a couple inches at most). However, if it tracks too far off the coast, we may wind up with nothing at all. The models should get a better handle on this by Friday morning. I would not cancel any plans at this time.

NEXT WEEK: Dangeously cold temperatures are expected Monday-Wednesday that will rival the Arctic blast from December 2022. Highs could be in the teens with lows near 0, and wind chills as low as 15 below 0 in some areas. This can result in frostbite in minutes on exposed skin, burst water pipes, and is hazardous to animals as well. With how cold it’s going to be, this tends to suppress any storm systems to our south. It’s possible that there could be some winter weather, but the more likely outcome for now is a storm that stays south of our area mid to late next week leaving us just brutally cold and dry.

2:52PM 1/14/25 - It’s cold this week. But we have some downright extreme cold coming next week and it could rival the arctic outbreak we experienced in December of 2022.

All 3 major long range forecast models are calling consistently for temperatures 20-30 degrees below average. That would mean highs in the teens with lows near or below 0. Wind chills on all 3 models reach the -10 to -20 degree range. If this comes to fruition, it would be the coldest air not only of the season, but possibly since that arctic outbreak in 2022.

How cold will it get? We don’t know yet. Models tend to be too aggressive with the cold air this far out. But it’s very likely that we will see highs in the teens with lows in the single digits early and mid next week with below, maybe well below 0 wind chills.

Right now there are no strong signals for winter storms, but we are watching Sunday/Monday for potential of light winter precip. Details will become clearer later this week.

12:26PM 1/11/25 - Last nights snow event definitely over performed in a lot of areas, with a widespread 1-3” of snow. Snow actually fell quite heavily for a time under some of the bands, which allowed a lot of roads to become snow covered. Based off traffic cams, it seems like most roads are clear now. But if traveling, still use caution.

2:27 AM EST 01/11/2025 - WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES have now been expanded northward to cover much of central and northern Maryland, our entire viewing area excluding some in Harford County. These are scheduled to remain in effect until 7:00 AM EST Saturday morning. According to the National Weather Service as of 2:08 AM, up to an additional 2" of snow accumulation is possible.

1:16 AM 01/11/2025 - Road conditions are beginning and will continue to deteriorate during the overnight hours as a band of moderate snowfall is making its way through the area.

Being on the roadways during the overnight hours, prior to sunrise, is not a good idea at this time. A burst of moderate snowfall is currently moving through the area. Across many locations, about 0.5" of snow has already been reported as a result. With road temperatures being well below freezing for much of the region, most of the snow is accumulating on the roadways. Driving conditions will continue to get more slick as precipitation continues this morning, prior to sunrise. Once the sun rises, I still expect most roadways to be clear by the afternoon and potentially even the later portions of the morning. There shouldn't be any problems for those heading into Baltimore to watch the wild card game this weekend, with lots not opening until 3:00 PM.

8:29 PM EST 01/10/2025 - A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been issued and is now in effect until 7:00 AM EST Saturday morning across portions of central and southern Maryland, including Anne Arundel, Prince George's, and southern Montgomery Counties.

Snow will push into the area from the southwest over the next couple hours, arriving within a couple hours of midnight. Snowfall rates will remain light for the most part, with an isolated band of moderate snowfall rates, between 0.25" and 0.5" per hour.

Across the general area, about 1" of snow is expected. However, in the more southern regions, closer and south of U.S. Route 50, closer to 2" of accumulation cannot be ruled out. These are the locations that are most likely to experience a moderate band of snowfall.
