If your dog hates fireworks, please talk to your veterinarian about medications for Fourth of July next week! We see many dogs who have stress diarrhea, lacerations from jumping out of windows( yes through closed windows to get away), hit by car after running away etc over the holidays. If you are an animal lover, consider using the money you spend on fireworks for supplies for a local animal shelter instead and go see a city or town event instead. It helps the pets and wildlife in the area have a safe and happy holiday AND you help the local animal shelter!

A vacation travel website recently ranked Acadia as the #1 most dog-friendly national park in America. Well-behaved dog owners are welcome, too. Federal law requires that all pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet (2 m) at all times. Collect and dispose of animal waste in trash containers. Find information about service animals, the Bark Ranger program, and a list of locations where pets are restricted from entry at go.nps.gov/AcadiaPets (Photo courtesy Briana Moore. Are you thinking about giving your two legged sweat heart some chocolatey treats this month. If you go on a chocolate buying spree, make sure to store it where your dog and cat can't find it!

Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats. Milk chocolate has less toxic effect than dark or baker's chocolate. Nuts covered in chocolate require a larger quantity to cause issues but also remember that macadamia nuts can cause issues in our pets as well.

In low doses, chocolate will only cause vomiting/diarrhea. However in high doses, it can lead to high heart rates, seizures, coma, and even death.

Knowing the type of chocolate and rough estimate of the amount they ate is helpful to figure out if it's a toxic dose. Animal Poison control can be helpful and there are some rough estimations that can be done via chocolate toxicity calculators on line. If you are ever concerned we are always happy to see your pet and assess them.

Please remember to protect your pets from the cold this weekend.
Symptoms of cold discomfort:
-licking paws
-lifting up paws in turn
-lameness

Tips:
Bring your outdoor cats indoors or make sure they have a warm, safe, structure they can hide in.

Even artic breed dogs should be brought inside, they don't always know their own limits.

You may need to use paw protection such as boots or paw wax this weekend.

Limit time outside to just urinate and p**p and bring them right back inside.

Pets who have short hair or are older, may need to wear a jacket or protective layering this weekend.

Remember that outdoor cats or stray cats may be hiding in the hood of your car.

Do not leave your pets in the car this weekend.

Consider feeding your older pets or outdoor pets more food this weekend.

Cats can get frost bite of the ears easily. Bring them inside!

The holiday weekend is looking to show off beautiful Maine weather. Although it seems perfect for hiking, walking, BBQing, and relaxing with family, even at 70 F it can be too hot in the car for your pets. Do not leave them in the car. Cracked windows do not allow for enough air circulation to mitigate the heat. Here are some safety tips to keep your pets safe!
