It can be surprisingly hard to correctly interpret dog body language! The better we learn to understand our dogs, the more effectively we can communicate with them.

Relationships are a two way street!

If your dog turns their head and averts their eyes to the left or right, yet the rest of the body remains stationary, this is them saying, they need a break or they feel concerned. By averting their eyes with a head turn, they are communicating that they are not a threat. The dog in the photo is also doing a nose lick.

If your dog turns their head while keeping their eyes focused on a trigger, this communicates a higher level of stress or fear - you’ll see the side of their face and the whites of their eyes.

Communication is a two way street. It is vital that we, as human caretakers of our canine companions, learn to understand them as much as (if not more than!) we seek for them to understand us! There are numerous benefits to being able to better interpret your dog's body language. Please feel free to reach out for further resources on learning to interpret what your dog is "saying".

Dogs communicate through posture, making these cues important for understanding their feelings and staying proactive when it comes to their well-being.

Our Montgomery County Animal Care and Control shelter has an important message for pet owners regarding tomorrow's solar eclipse.

Pets and the Solar Eclipse: What You Need to Know

Your pets won't lose their eyesight during the solar eclipse tomorrow, so there's no need to get them goggles or sunglasses. Animals instinctively know not to stare at the sun, so don't force them to do so during the eclipse.

Here are 4 tips to keep in mind:
🌘 Keep your pets indoors during the eclipse. Although the phenomenon itself won't harm them, the sudden change in daylight may cause them stress. It's best to keep them in a familiar, safe environment.
🌘 Avoid large crowds or viewing events with your pets. The excitement and noise may cause unnecessary stress and trigger their fight or flight instinct.
🌘 Stick to your pets' routines as much as possible. Cats, in particular, appreciate a routine they can rely on. Dogs take cues from their owners and enjoy a sense of normalcy.
🌘 To help your pets feel safe and calm, turn down the shades and keep the television on. This will provide some background noise and help block out any commotion that may be happening outside.

Remember, your pets are unlikely to behave in any unusual ways during the eclipse. Just be mindful of their normal routines and keep them safe and comfortable.

Tips for Pet Owners During an Eclipse

What you need to know to keep your pet safe.

Companion animals are more likely to be concerned about the humans acting differently than they are the eclipse itself.
Dogs, cats, birds, etc. do not normally stare at the sun; they heed their natural reflexes not to look (unlike us curious humans).
Avoid encouraging your pets to look at the eclipse. They will not understand it, and doing so without eye protection can harm their retinas, too. It may also be perceived as a confrontational interaction.
If extra people will be going in and out of your home for an eclipse party, for example, make sure to have a second barrier to avoid pets escaping (baby gate, flexible pen, having dog on leash etc.).
If you are having visitors and that is a situation that has stressed your pet previously, talk to your veterinarian now about management strategies. They may include anti-anxiety supplements, pheromones or medications to help your pet have the best eclipse experience possible.
If the increase in darkness prompts your pet to sleep or nap, let them. (One of the perks of being a pet is napping whenever they want.)

Read this. Read it again and then pay attention to your dog. She’s trying so hard to communicate and tell you how she’s feeling.

Thanks for this great advice.
