As many of you may or may not know I have battled with depression for quite some time. With all the stress of my personal life the rodentry has just gotten to be too much for me handle right now. Thankfully, my good friend Tia from Nyx Hamstery was able to come by and pickup all my babies and take them back to Port St Lucie. I know my babies and my lines will be in great hands with her! If you are looking for a hamster she is the one to contact. I will likely get back into hamsters at some point, but for now I’m taking a much needed break to get things settled at our new house and just breathe. Thank you all!!

Thank you all so much for your support this weekend!! We are officially sold out of weaned female mice for the week! We should have more next weekend though if anyone is interested!

This is by far the busiest I’ve been since getting into breeding and I couldn’t be more grateful! Sent 24 mice to Worms Wiggle In so if you are in Gainesville you can stop by there and check them out. I have some of the girls they got pictured here.

Hey everyone!!! I’ve been considering changing the name of the page to Mosquito Bay Pets. We keep a lot more than just rodents. We have reptiles, birds, and who knows what else will be coming in the future. What do you think? Would you like to see more varied animal content or should I stick to just rodents?

Check out this beer I got at LoveBird - Almost Famous Chicken!!! I very rarely drink beer, but I couldn’t pass up this can!! I’m going to cut the top off and use it as a cactus planter 😍

Also, if you are in the Lakeland area Love Bird is delicious! We had it for the first time tonight and 5/5 . Especially the dirty fries and the Mac and cheese!!

I’ve had lots of people message me asking what the best setups are for mice so I thought I would do a post covering how I keep my mice and how I suggest others keep theirs.

If you are feeling adventurous bioactive is a great way to keep mice, but there is a learning curve to doing bioactive for mammals and the start up is more expensive and more labor intensive. Once you get the hang of it through this type of setup required much less maintenance than a standard setup. I personally haven’t kept any of my mice bioactive, but I do plan on trying some of our African Pygmy Mice and our Black Nile Spineys in bioactives soon. When I do I will post the process.

If you aren’t feeling up to the challenge of bioactive, or if bugs just aren’t your thing don’t worry! I currently keep all of my rodents on regular bedding and everyone is happy, healthy, and thriving.

One of the most important parts of setting up your mice is selecting the right cage. I personally love DIY bin cages as they are lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to maintain, but glass tanks can work just as well.

One mistake many people make is thinking bigger is better for all animals when it comes to caging. While bigger can be better it can also be overwhelming to some animals. If you are going to get a really large cage you will want to make sure it is full of clutter like toys and hides so your mice have lots of places to hide and feel more comfortable exploring. I personally use 64 qt bins for my breeding groups of mice which are usually 1 male to 2-3 females and I use 104qt bins for growing out young females. I usually keep 10-15 mice in each of these bins. If you want to go the tank route I would suggest a 20 long for 3-7 mice and a 40 breeder for 8+.

After you have selected your cage the next step is bedding. I use a thin layer of pine pellets at the bottom of my cages topped with 2-4” of Aspen or h**p bedding. The pine pellets are amazing at soaking up liquids and do a great job at keeping smells down and the Aspen/h**p is perfect for burrowing. If you aren’t able to get Aspen or h**p where you live kiln dried pine is another good option, but make sure it says kiln dried or it could cause issues for your mice.

Now comes the fun part! Nesting materials, hides, and toys! I like to give my rodents a variety of nesting materials and I often change it up depending in what I have on hand. Some fun and safe options are hay (orchard grass, Timothy, and alfalfa are good and usually easy to find), paper towels, toilet paper, cardboard (especially tp and paper towel rolls), and shredded paper. I always make sure to give my hairless mice one of the softer options when I’m cleaning their cages so they have something that feels nice on their skin.

For toys there are so many options. Most bird toys are also safe for mice and they will love to play on ladders and hanging toys. Sanitized pine cones, apple wood sticks, and most toys advertised for other rodents are also great! If you are feeling creative you can even make your own toys with inexpensive items from Amazon like popsicle sticks, finger traps, and jute string. I’ve even seen some mouse owners use plastic doll houses for their mice to play in. The most important thing to keep in mind when selecting toys is that they are chemical free and safe for your mice.

For hides I love using cork bark tubes, but there are endless options. Plant pots, upside down plastic bowls, reptile hides, etc. If you decide to use terra cotta plant pots be sure the hole in the pot is large enough for your largest mouse to get through or they could get stuck. If you want to use terra cotta but are worried about the hole you can always break the pot in half. The mice will love it either way. When using plastic hides I recommend drilling small holes in the top to let air through. If not mice can sometimes cause a lot of moisture to build up in the hide which can lead to respiratory issues.

Wheels: there is so much debate on what wheels are safe and which aren’t. When choosing a wheel pick one that is enclosed so the mouse can’t get its tail or feet caught. I would recommend saucers or niteangel wheels, but there are a lot of other good options on the market!

Hey everyone!!! I’m so excited to share that we finally closed on our new house! It’s been in the works for months and we are so happy to finally be done with the process.

We have a ton of work to do to get the house ready for the animals before we move in, but I’m going to try to do a better job getting pics of available babies from now on! I currently have a few Siamese girls (like the one pictured below) that are available as well as 7 female hamsters, and 4 black male hairless mice. If you are interested in anyone let me know and I will work on getting pics over the next few days.

Hey everyone! I know a lot of people don’t discuss when they have issues with their rodentry, but I want to be completely transparent with everyone. We are currently in the process of battling biting mites. We aren’t sure how we got them as we quarantine all new animals, but we think we brought them home from a local reptile show on some dwarf hamsters. We are currently treating everyone including our personal animals and hope to have the issue eradicated by May 1st. We believe the issue is isolated to our quarantine room, but we have been treating all of our animals as if everyone is effected. I haven’t seen any mites on any mice, but just to be safe we won’t be allowing any animals to go to new homes until the issue is completely resolved! I’m sorry for the inconvenience!! Hey everyone! Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth! Life has been insanely busy. We have been trying to buy a larger house since October so we have more room for all of our animals, but it has been more of a challenge than we expected. In the last three weeks we have found 2 houses we loved, made 2 offers above list price and didn’t get 2 houses. :( We also rescued a senior dog from a rural shelter. I am going to be getting caught up on everything this week and will make a post of available hamsters and possibly also some available mice. Until then here is a picture of Buddy the dog who we are hospice fostering.

After a lot of thought and consideration I’ve decided to downsize the rodentry for now. I’m working two jobs and just don’t have enough time to dedicate to all the species I’m currently working with.

We will no longer be breeding dwarf hamsters or gerbils and will be greatly reducing our mouse breeding.

We will also no longer be selling any animals to pet stores so the only way to get animals from me is through me directly. The one exception to this is Worms Wiggle In in Gainesville. They will still be selling our mice.

I am going to be shutting down mouse adoptions for the next few months. If I have anyone available I will make a post, but I am mostly just going to be breeding to improve my lines for now. If this changes I will definitely let everyone know!

Hamster adoptions will continue as usual. I can meet adopters most Saturdays or Sundays and I am happy to bring all the babies when we meet so you can choose your new baby in person. I currently only meet people in Bartow, but I can meet closer to Lake Wales if you are coming from that direction.

Dolly Parton is one of my favorite girls!!! I recently moved her to my office and she greets me first thing in the morning and asks to be held. She hangs out in my lap when I work, and spends quite a bit of time playing in her cage during the day. Dolly has 2 boys and 2 girls from her last litter that would love to find their very own families! Both girls and 1 boy look like their momma and the other boy is pictured.

Working in my office and watching these cuties!

The girl on the top is a retired breeder that was kicked out of her group. She is doing great on her own building big nests and having fun digging!

The 3 on the bottom are boys. They are left over from the last show we vended. All 3 are very sweet and looking for a home they can go to together!

Gerbils are super fun pets. They are active during the day. They are friendly, but love to stay moving, so they aren’t the best choice for someone looking for a cuddle buddy. They are pretty low maintenance pets. They love wheels, chew toys, and hides.

Went to visit Worms Wiggle In yesterday! They are currently stocked with our Campbell’s Dwarf Hamsters, Gerbils, and Fancy Mice and they plan on carrying our Syrian Hamsters and Guinea Pigs in the future!!

We were able to pickup some quality supplies at great prices!! Cork bark, Bamboo, Igloos for the guinea pigs, and guinea pig food!

If you are within driving distance of the store I highly recommend checking it out! They have high quality feeder insects and rodents as well as a great selection of dry goods! The owners are super friendly and awesome as well!!

We are so excited to be partnering up with them!!

Pictured are a few feeders I fell in love with while we were at the store. The mice will be breeders, we will be working on improving their type and temperaments before releasing any for adoption, but we loved their colors! The rats are just pets!
