Barn Manager Aurora is off to California to crew the 100 Mile Tevis endurance ride!

This amazing annual challenge gives riders 24 hours to cross the mountains from Truckee down to Auburn, CA during the summer full moon and has a 50% completion rate.

While it's been 8 years since she made the trek, this will be Aurora's 6th time crewing--and first time crewing for a mule! Of the 143 entrants, there are only 2 mules in the ride this year, both from the same stable.

We've just added a tire swing under the shady oaks in the lower acreage.

It is a lovely location, and if you go during turnout hours, you can sway to the sonorous snorts of the gelding pastures wondering what the heck you are doing😊

It was a week of herd shuffling here at the stables.
We strive to keep each horse personality happy here and sometimes that gets complicated!

New horses, injuries, illnesses, loss, change in herd behavior when some members are temporarily gone, all are facets of the boarding stable gem. We are fortunate to have space to play with group dynamics and safe paddocks for those who need time to themselves (with many fence neighbors of course).

Last week our Meadow Run Stables family said goodbye to a bright spark, an opinionated lady, a sweet, goofy bay mare named Carlie.

There's no easy way to describe it. We turned Carlie out one morning in May of last year in a large, well fenced field--and within an hour something had happened to her hind end. Humans love answers, and answers were sought diligently and lovingly by her owner. What we know is that she lost stability, balance, and coordination.

For a year Carlie's human fought for her, vetted her repeatedly with various clinics, hand walked her daily, tried all the things. For a year we barn staff cleaned around Carlie, laughed at her antics, were welcomed by her nickers at every moment there might be more snacks coming. We set up temporary small pens, enlarged them, tore them down, moved them. We all hoped.

In the end it was determined that Carlie's physical self was now quietly asking to be done. She spent some lovely last afternoons here on the finest grass and rolled to her hearts content. She headed peacefully down the road to help further education for others at a nearby university.

It was heart breaking and utterly, utterly, horse ownership. Something that can happen to any of us, any day, and yet, as fiercely as we love, something that can't ever quite scare us away from them.
