Being a Hypersensitive Human: What It Means and Why Boundaries Matter

For those of us who identify as hypersensitive, life can feel like constantly walking through a world of amplified emotions, both ours and those around us. Itā€™s like every interaction, every space we enter, and every person we meet carries an energy that we not only notice but also deeply feel. This heightened awareness has its giftsā€”like a profound empathy and the ability to connect on an intuitive levelā€”but it also comes with unique challenges.

What Hypersensitivity Looks and Feels Like

For a hypersensitive person, what might be a subtle mood or energy shift to others can feel like a full wave crashing over us. We pick up on the unspoken, the underlying, and even the unresolved emotions of those around us. This can lead to feelings of overwhelm and stress, especially if we're not in an environment where boundaries are understood and respected. When hypersensitive individuals set boundaries, itā€™s not about rejecting or distancingā€”itā€™s about protecting our energy and well-being in order to show up as our best selves.

The Importance of Boundaries and the Role of LASA

LASA stands for Listen, Acknowledge, Support, and Allow, an approach built around respecting and honoring each other's boundaries and experiences. For hypersensitive individuals, this practice is essential because we need to feel seen and supported in a way that doesnā€™t intrude on our sensitivity or expect us to shoulder energies that arenā€™t ours. Respecting boundaries isnā€™t just about personal comfortā€”itā€™s about understanding that everyone has different levels of tolerance for emotional weight.

When we set a boundary, weā€™re not trying to exclude anyone. Rather, weā€™re asking for mutual respect in our energetic space. Expecting us to "just deal with it" is both unfair and harmful. Hypersensitive individuals thrive when they feel that their boundaries are valued because it allows us to navigate the world without feeling constantly overexposed to energies that we may not have the capacity to hold.

Understanding Boundaries in Dogs: The Parallel with Hypersensitive Humans

Just as hypersensitive people experience the world deeply, many dogs are also hypersensitive to their environment. They react to subtle shifts in energy, intentions, and even our unspoken emotions. And just as we set boundaries to protect our energy, dogs communicate their boundaries through behaviors like growling. Unfortunately, growling is often misunderstood as aggression, when, in fact, itā€™s a dogā€™s way of saying, ā€œIā€™m uncomfortableā€ or ā€œI need space.ā€ Itā€™s simply a form of canine communication.

For a dog, growling is no different from a hypersensitive person asking for a boundary to be respected. When a dog growls, itā€™s setting a boundary to keep itself and others safe. Ignoring or punishing this boundary can lead to confusion, stress, and even escalate behaviors, just as disregarding a hypersensitive personā€™s boundary can cause discomfort and overwhelm. Dogs, like hypersensitive people, need their boundaries to be acknowledged and honored for them to feel secure and understood.

Respecting Boundaries, Whether Human or Canine

Boundaries arenā€™t barriers. Theyā€™re bridges that help connect us in ways that feel safe, healthy, and sustainable. For those of us who are hypersensitive, our boundaries allow us to stay grounded and focused. When our boundaries are respected, weā€™re able to contribute and connect more meaningfully. By honoring the space we need, youā€™re allowing us to show up as our full selves, without the need to protect or hide.

In the same way, respecting a dogā€™s boundaries can build a stronger, trust-based relationship. Listening to the cues they giveā€”whether thatā€™s a growl, avoiding certain interactions, or needing spaceā€”creates an environment where they can feel safe, seen, and secure. Rather than assuming ā€œjust deal with it,ā€ we can approach both humans and dogs with the mindset of LASA: Listen, Acknowledge, Support, and Allow.

Letā€™s all strive for a world where both hypersensitivity and a dogā€™s boundaries are understood, and where setting boundaries is seen as a strength. By respecting these boundaries, we create more room for trust, connection, and authenticityā€”whether in our human relationships or with our canine companions.

Exciting News from Precision Dog Sport! šŸš€

Weā€™re thrilled to announce a transformative new direction in our training programsā€”a focus that goes beyond obedience and digs deeper into the heart of what drives behavior.

At Precision Dogsport, we know that behavior is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, science tells us that behavior is often a response to a variety of underlying factorsā€”from sensory inputs and emotional experiences to the subtle cues our dogs pick up from us. Behavior doesnā€™t exist in isolation; itā€™s deeply influenced by the way dogs perceive, process, and react to the world around them.

Research shows that dogs, like us, experience behavior as the result of a network of responses:

Sensory Input: Dogs constantly take in information through their senses, especially smell, sight, and hearing. This sensory information plays a major role in triggering behaviors, especially when thereā€™s a buildup of overstimulation or stress.

Emotional Mirroring: Dogs are experts at mirroring our emotions. They pick up on even subtle shifts in our mood, energy, and stress, which can lead to changes in their own behavior.

Nervous System Health: A balanced nervous system is key for a dogā€™s ability to respond calmly. Stress, anxiety, and environmental shifts can all disrupt this balance, leading to behavioral changes that are actually calls for help.

āœØ Whatā€™s New at Precision Dogsport? To address these deeper influences, weā€™re introducing new courses that prioritize emotional awareness and connection:

Emotion-Focused Training Camps: These arenā€™t just about correcting behavior; theyā€™re a chance for your dog to reset, reconnect, and find calm in a balanced environment with a stable pack. Our goal is to give your dog a chance to return to a healthy state of mind and learn coping mechanisms that will last.

Owner Empowerment Workshops: Learn how your own emotions and energy directly influence your dogā€™s behavior and discover techniques to foster calmness and confidence in yourself. When you understand how to manage your own energy, you can better guide your dog.

Behavior Reflection Tools: Track emotional patterns, understand what triggers your dogā€™s actions, and gain a clear picture of whatā€™s behind certain behaviors. This tool helps you stay connected to your dogā€™s progress and see improvements over time.

Our new programs are designed to bring you and your dog into true alignment, focusing on calm connection, mutual respect, and emotional well-being. When we start with emotions and energy, the behavioral transformations we see are not only more effectiveā€”theyā€™re life-changing. šŸŒŸ

If youā€™re ready to take dog training to the next level, we invite you to join us on this incredible journey. Precision Dogsport is here to guide you and your dog in building a partnership that thrives on understanding, calmness, and resilience.

Stay tuned for course dates and workshop details, and get ready to transform how you think about dog training. Weā€™re excited to have you with us! ā€œTrust the Journey.ā€

Over the past few years, Iā€™ve realized something that has transformed my perspective, my work, and my life. The more knowledge and experience we invite into our lives, the greater our perspective becomesā€”and with that, a deeper empathy for both ourselves and others. šŸŒ±
While simultaneously learning, working, and growing myself, I was also learning huge lessons in patience, boundaries, clear communication, body language, and toneā€”each playing a significant role in our relationships with the world around us. Best part was I was learning these lessons through dogs. As I grew alongside the dogs I worked with, I began to see how my own growth was helping heal the dogs that needed it most.
In dog training and rehabilitation, itā€™s not just about the techniques or the commands. It's about understanding how our own energy and emotional state affect the dogs we work with. Dogs are incredibly sensitive to the emotional cues we give off, often reflecting our own state of mind. By working on ourselvesā€”our patience, our empathy, our awarenessā€”we can help dogs heal and grow as well. šŸ•šŸ’”
If youā€™re looking to learn more about any of these topicsā€”whether itā€™s personal growth, healing, or how your energy and your Human Design affect your relationship with your dogā€”feel free to DM us for more information. Weā€™d love to help you deepen your understanding and connection with your dog. šŸ§ ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Just as we navigate our own healing journeys, the emotional well-being of our dogs is intricately linked to our state of mind. When we come from a place of fear or trauma, we might project that onto our dogs, which can impact their behavior and emotional health.
Dogs, much like us, seek safety and security. When weā€™ve grown up in an environment filled with anxiety or instability, we may unconsciously carry that energy into our interactions with our pets. Instead of fostering a sense of trust and calm, our fears can manifest in our dog's behavior, leading to anxiety, insecurity, and even aggression.
If we long for our dogs to feel safe and secure, itā€™s essential to recognize that their behavior often mirrors our own emotional state. Just as we need to heal from our past experiences to create a loving, supportive environment, our dogs need that same space to thrive.
Healing ourselves ā€” facing our fears, setting boundaries, and choosing love over anxiety ā€” allows us to show up for our dogs in a healthier way. When we nurture our own emotional well-being, we create a peaceful environment where our dogs can feel secure and confident.
By healing together, we can break the cycle of fear and create a life filled with love, trust, and understanding. Remember, your dog is a reflection of you, and the energy you bring into your home shapes their world.
If youā€™re struggling with anxiety or behavioral issues in your dog, consider seeking help from a qualified dog trainer or a professional who understands the link between human emotions and canine behavior.

Pro Tip: Reading Your Dogā€™s Body Language
One of the keys to advocating for your dog is understanding their body language. Dogs communicate their discomfort through subtle signs long before they show more obvious behaviors like growling or barking. Learning to recognize these signals will help you step in early and prevent stressful encounters.
Here are some signs that your dog may be uncomfortable:
Yawning (when not tired)
Lip licking or panting without heat or exertion
Turning their head away from someone or another dog

Tucked tail or trying to move behind you
Stiff body posture or suddenly freezing in place
Advocating for your dog starts with observing these cues and creating space when necessary. Don't hesitate to remove your dog from situations where they seem uneasy. You know your dog best!

šŸš§ The Power of Boundaries in Dog Training šŸš§

Boundaries are the foundation of a well-behaved and balanced dog. Setting clear, consistent boundaries gives your dog structure, helping them understand whatā€™s expected and where their limits are. šŸŒŸ

šŸ—ļø Why Boundaries Matter:

Security: Dogs thrive when they know the rules and feel safe within them.

Trust: Consistent boundaries build trust between you and your dog, allowing them to rely on your leadership.

Focus: Boundaries help your dog stay focused, even in high-distraction environments. They learn to look to you for guidance!

šŸ’” Training Tip: Use commands like ā€œPlaceā€ to create mental and physical boundaries for your dog. Teach them to stay in a designated spot until released, which not only builds self-control but also reinforces trust in your leadership.

Show your dog that boundaries arenā€™t limitationsā€”theyā€™re pathways to trust, confidence, and freedom! šŸ•šŸ’Ŗ

šŸ§  Pro Tip: Understanding Your Dogā€™s Motivation vs. Distraction šŸ•
Does your dog seem more interested in their surroundings than the treats or toys youā€™re offering during training? It might be time to rebuild motivation! šŸ’”
šŸ—ļø Start Small: Work in low-distraction environments to get your dog fully focused on you. Gradually increase distractions as their motivation grows.
šŸ”‘ Find What Works: Use high-value rewards that your dog lovesā€”whether itā€™s food, toys, or play.
šŸ‘€ Balance is Key: Remember, motivation must outweigh distractions for training to be successful!

Most all of my work here at Precision Dog Sport is rehabilitation. Dogs present very often as unsure and insecure. What a mindset like this coupled with little to no actual leadership manifests as can be anything from aggression, reactivity, destructive behavior, fearn etc.
Early in my career, i enjoyed the fun dogs and distanced myself from the really difficult dogs. I wasn't ready to give myself fully to the level they needed. I still needed to master my own state of mind and emotions. How can we truly teach other humans and their pets to regulate themselves if we haven't become masters ourselves.
There is a reason the saying "Hurt people, hurt people" and "Healed people, heal people" exists. We can not truly get to the root and address the trauma if the lens we view life through is riddled with our own unhealed traumas. Emotional maturity, the ability to regulate our own body and mind is paramount to being fully present for our clients and their dogs.
The rest of the world may be fooled by the masks we wear, but not our animals. If we allow them to be our mirrors and allow ourselves to be truly seen, a dogs capacity to love and listen is unmatched.
Dogs are the medium in which i get to express my passion and purpose every day. Allow me to help you and your dog to experience the relationship you have always wanted.

Jack came to me over 2 years ago. Jack is deaf and was struggling with reactivity. Jacks foster rescued Jack from being euthanized. She saw something in him others couldn't.
After being told by a local trainer, there was nothing to do that she should put him down she found her way to Precision Dog Sport. After about a 90-minute evaluation, i had Mr. Jack asleep on my lap. What we had here was a misunderstood dog who was tired of being told what to do with peoples bodies (spacial pressure) and frustration. He was literally screaming at the top of his lungs for someone to see him for who he was and what he needed.
After a 6 week behavioral, Jack learned a whole new way of communication using the remote collar. Now, having a fair way to communicate with Jack makes him a happy boy.
