Brechdan Cardigans is trans + q***r owned. you are SAFE here. I will also never knowingly refer you to someone who won't unconditionally support basic human rights for all 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Earlier this month I, like many others, changed the profile photo of my page in support of Pride Month. While it was overwhelmingly well-received, I did have a negative response from one person that I promptly removed from this page and went on with life. But, now that Pride Month is coming to an end, and this small person and others like them will return to comfort as corporations remove their rainbow signage, I feel the need to address how I felt about this interaction.
A while back, I found out that a prospective puppy buyer had been asking around about me as a breeder. I expect this, and encourage this, as you should know and be comfortable with where your puppy comes from and know that it has been ethically and responsibly bred. What caught me off guard, though, was that they were already comfortable with my breeding program and ethics…but was I “safe”? Was I LGBTQ+ friendly? Would I ghost them (or worse) because they were q***r? And I have to tell you, I was not prepared to find out that that was a real concern for bright-eyed, ambitious young people getting into the world of purebred dogs.
In my 20 years involved with Ibizan Hounds, I have never met a Beezer who cared who was petting them, or feeding them, or loving them. My only concern as a breeder is the quality of life that someone can provide for their dog, and that is certainly what the dogs care about, too. The unconditional love provided by dogs to their humans is something that is not always just enjoyed as a family companion…sometimes that bond is all that someone might have. A homeless person on a corner panhandling and sharing their meal with their dog…a soldier returning from unimaginable experiences relying on their service dog as a lifeline…a happy and calm therapy dog sitting with special needs children, sharing with them the confidence they need to be able to read out loud…or a dog who might be the only companion to a young person who has been disowned by their blood family for any number of reasons. And in all of these instances and countless others, being present and loved is all that dog cares about.
Dogs love unconditionally, and a lot of people could learn a thing or two from them. It is because of this quality, shared by breeds of all sizes, shapes and historical purposes, that humans have been so intricately bonded with dogs for centuries. And for that reason, the dog community is a beautiful blend of people from all walks of life. There are a lot of people who face barriers when trying to get their foot in the door in dog sports, barriers that strait, cisgender white people do not have to contend with. A little compassion toward your fellow dog-lovers is literally the least you can offer to another person who shares your same passion.
So, on this last day of June, celebrate the beauty of each individual person that inhabits this earth, especially those who love and are loved by dogs. And if you find yourself having a hard time with that, maybe just quietly be thankful that you don’t need a month or a parade to celebrate your ability to love who you love or to freely live in the beautiful skin in which you were born.
