"Dogs are our link to paradise."
Ethan could be your one-way ticket to paradise, but like all great trips, you must make the leap.
Ethan is a one-year-old lab mix who came into our care after being found with his brother (Evan). He has been great with dogs at our facility and knows how to sit. He is a tremendously friendly dog who would make a great family pet.

UPDATE: ADOPTED!!
Have you heard of the expression "Every Dog has its Day"?
Evan hopes to use some of that good luck to find him a loving home that he can call "his." Evan first came into our care after being found with his brother Ethan. His owners never came forward, so they are both ready and waiting to be busted out of our shelter.
Evan is a happy, loving, goofy 1-year-old who weighs about 60 lbs. He does great with dogs in our care, and while we have no kids at our facility, we think he would do great with them too.
If you are interested in helping Evan have his "day," apply today!

NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY🍦🤤🍨
July as a whole is celebrated as National Ice Cream Month, but every third Sunday in July is celebrated as a dedicated day to one of America's favorite frozen treats. So, make sure to celebrate by going out for some well-deserved ice cream 😋🍦
"Thanks to President Reagan, we celebrate National Ice Cream Day every third Sunday in July, meaning July 17 this year. Reagan wanted to commemorate a treat enjoyed by over 90 percent of the US population. In 1984, he decreed a day for ice cream, and his proclamation actually glorified the dairy industry in America. In fact, Americans still lead the world when it comes to eating this frozen delight: 23 gallons a year to be precise. Reagan also proclaimed July as National Ice Cream month, describing ice cream as ‘‘a nutritious and wholesome food enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States.’’ Since then, the holiday has sparked worldwide cravings and is traditionally celebrated year after year..."

💡FUN FACT FRIDAY💡
Did you know that over 50% of pet owners let their pets sleep in their bed?
"According to a recent survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association, nearly half of dogs sleep in their owner’s beds. The survey found that 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs and 32% of large dogs sleep with their owners. The survey also found that 62% of cats sleep with their adult owners, and another 13% of cats sleep with children."

Why do dogs get the "zoomies"?
Every dog parent has experienced it: that moment when your dog suddenly decides to go on a sprinting spree. Your mild-mannered pup is replaced by a high-octane speed racer who runs around the home, darting back and forth, and, it seems, having a great time. Most pet parents refer to these crazy bursts of energy as “dog zoomies.”
Dog zoomies are also known as Frenetic Random Activity Periods, or FRAPS, which is almost as cool a name as dog zoomies.
“FRAPs are a totally normal release of pent up energy,” says Dr. Rachel Barrack of New York City’s Animal Acupuncture. An episode of this dog behavior is typically described as a wild run that seemingly comes out of nowhere and lasts for a few minutes at most.
A dog having zoomies is like a wind-up toy that was wound to the max, says Dr. Jill Sackman, DVM, DACVB, owner of Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan, who points out the importance of looking at what was going on beforehand. “Wild energy with running can have a lot of different instigators,” she says. ”I think most people would see it as a playful and positive energy, but evaluate it situationally.”
Our wild child Priscilla is no stranger to zoomies and has them almost everyday! Formally known as the "zoomie queen", Princess Priscilla is looking for a home where she can enjoy her zoomies in comfort. For more information about Priscilla, give us a call, send us and email, or message us on Facebook Messenger 😉

Did you know that "pit bull" is not a breed?
The term “pit bull” usually doesn’t refer to a single dog breed. Pit bull is a broad description for a type of dog. Many dog breeds, including American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and American Bulldogs — just to name a few — are classified as pit bulls.
A substantial number of pups falling into the class of Pit Bull dogs are actually mixed breeds, says Haylee Heisel, Dogtown behavior consultant at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. And humans, she says, are notoriously unable to correctly identify mixed breeds. “Many studies have proven this—some indicating we are wrong up to 90 percent of the time.”

The Orange Tabbies are here to tell us a little about themselves! 😍
1.) Did you know that male orange tabby cats outnumber females approximately 4 to 1?
For reasons that are not fully understood, about 80% of orange tabby cats are male. This certainly seems to point to some genetic link between sex and coat markings, although veterinarians and researchers still haven’t seemed to pinpoint the exact factors. Conversely, most Calico and tortoiseshell cats are female, so it’s evident that there are strong correlations that go with either sex.

2.) Our polydactyl kitty, Lily, has an extra fact for you! Did you know that polydactyly is caused by a genetic mutation?
Polydactyly is caused by a genetic mutation in a dominant gene and usually results in the formation of anywhere between four to seven toes on a kitty’s paws. The front paws are most often affected by polydactyly, but it can also occur on the hind paws; it’s extremely rare for a cat to have polydactyly on all four paws.

For our Fun Fact Friday, Coco would like us to tell you about "Black Dog Syndrome"!
Black dog syndrome, also known as BDS, is a phenomenon in pet adoption in which black dogs are ignored in favor of light-colored ones. Observed by shelters and rescue groups across the world, BDS is an issue negatively affecting the adoption rates of black pets. The reason behind the phenomenon is unclear.
Adopters might pass by black dogs because of a fear stigma against certain breed types—like pit bulls, for instance. Movies and television shows often portray big, black dogs as aggressive and intimidating, which could also convince potential adopters to avoid them. Some believe it could come down to how photogenic dogs are. Notoriously, black dogs do not photograph well. Lighter-colored dogs, on the other hand, do. When shelters or rescues photograph their adoptable animals to post on their website or on social media, lighter-colored dogs may have the upper hand...
Black dogs are no different than dogs of other colors. They act the same, provide the same amount of love, and give just as many kisses. If you want to help reduce the impacts of black dog syndrome, adopting one is the perfect solution.
Take Coco for example. This sweet, loving, loyal, playing, goofy, and affectionate little girl has been in our shelter for 65 days. For 65 days she's been passed over for smaller dogs, more "colorful" dogs, dogs that aren't housetrained, dogs who have less manners, and even dogs that will look just like her when they grow up. You can help Coco by sharing her posts, showing your neighbors who are looking for a dog, or maybe even by adopting her. Don't let this sweet girl stay here a moment longer! Help Coco find a home 🖤

- with Momo!
Did you know that cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping? It's true; on average cats sleep 13-16 hours a day, but can sleep even to 20 hours in one day as they get older. That's a whole lot of naps and a whole lot of time for you to get your cuddles in 😴
Much like a typical cat, Momo spends most of her day relaxing on her tree house and taking carefree naps. However, she does occasionally get up to get some zoomies out and play around. Once she's finished playing, she back to her tree house for a nap. If Momo sounds like your type of cuddly kitten then you should think about adopting her! Momo's adoption fee is $70 and she is available as of today! For more information about Momo, and to check on her availability, give us a call at +1 (618) 235-0585 extension 2, email us at [email protected], or come visit Momo in-person from 1pm-5pm! "Did you know that pibbles LOVE people? I mean, they really, really love people. They love to snuggle, cuddle, roll over for belly rubs, crawl in your lap if you’ll allow it, and stay as close to you as possible all day long. Pibbles are the original “velcro dog.”
The most common misconception about pit bulls is that they all have the capacity for aggression towards people, but temperament studies show that pitties rank high among the most affectionate, least aggressive dogs. In annual testing conducted by the American Temperament Test Society (http://atts.org/breed-statistics/statistics-page1/), pit bulls passed at a rating of 86.4%, higher than popular breeds such as golden retrievers, corgis, and beagles."
Our girl Coco is no different! She is the picture of an affectionate and loving dog. She loves to cuddle, play, go on walks, and be by your side all day! You can learn more about Coco, or ask about adopting Coco, by giving us a call at +1 (618) 235-0585 extension 2, email us at [email protected], or come visit Coco in-person from 1pm-5pm! We're also open from 10am-4pm on Saturdays 🥰
