St. Clair TNR & Rescue DBA Maggie's Mutt Mission St Clair TNR & Rescue
Adopt your best friend today! On October 9, 2013 I brought home my first puppy, Maggie. I always knew she was special!

A couple of years later we were discussing opening a rescue, and Maggie's Mutt Mission was born. After becoming involved with the No Kill movement in St. Clair County, IL, several volunteers saw a need for more rescues and foster homes in our county. On May 18, 2017, with the support of Amy King (my TNR/rescue partner in crime), Kurt Swanson, Lynn Haas, and Julie Voss, Maggie's Mutt Mission offici

ally opened. Hanna jumped in right away and helped a LOT! Two days later we rescued our first litter of kittens! We are a small TNR and rescue group with big dreams! We began doing TNR along the way, so we are now known as St. Clair TNR & Rescue, a nonprofit volunteer organization. Until they're all home! https://www.petfinder.com/member/us/il/belleville/st-clair-tnr-rescue-il891/

While our youngest foster is enjoying her time with Dora, there are so many more she’s wanting to foster. Dora’s sister, Stormi, really needs to go to a foster home soon. Would anyone like to give Dora her furever home? She’s super chill, sweet as can be, enjoys sitting in a lap, doesn’t mind dogs and cats, etc.

Snowball’s mama passed unexpectedly after adopting him two weeks ago. He’s rolling with the punches but would love to go to a cozy home very soon. He’s vetted, microchipped and ready to go. Submit an app at stclairtnrandrescue.com if you’d like to give this guy all the love.

Our rescue suffered quite a loss last night. Lori, a wonderful friend and one of our bottle feeders and kitten and cat fosters, passed away unexpectedly. She would always say, “Sure, bring them over!” when asked if she could foster a litter of kittens or a not so friendly adult. She fed newborns round the clock last summer and helped them become adoptable. She transported cats to the vet for neuters, vaccines, etc. and temporarily housed many. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, young cat, Patches, and her three senior cats that she bottle fed from birth, Snickers, Orangey and Pouncer. You will be missed very much! 🐾💜🐾

Skunk Alert!!!
A public service announcement from animal control:
February Through early March is skunk breeding season. Before you let your dogs out, make a little noise and give skunks time to move out of your yard.

If you come face to face with a skunk, stay calm and talk softly to let him know you’re there -- skunks have poor eyesight. Skunks are very sweet natured animals and don’t want to spray you. Go about your business and avoid startling them.
Skunks will give you several warnings if they are scared:
1. They will stomp their front feet
2. They turn their backs to you
3. They will do a handstand
4. They will spray up to 10 feet away

If a skunk DOES spray, here is a technique and recipe:
First, catch the dog (or the person!) as quickly as possible - don’t let them roll or rub on anything. If you have rubber gloves wear them. BLOT the spray off with paper towels.
Mix a paste from 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap, 3% hydrogen peroxide and ¼ cup baking soda and spread it on the area. Do not add water! Let it sit for ten minutes then rinse off and repeat.
If this happens to be on a human or hairless animal, leave out the baking soda. The baking soda is sort of like an exfoliant and is really abrasive to bare skin.
Skunks are omnivores (eat both plant and animal material). They prefer to eat insects, particularly grasshoppers, beetles, and crickets. They also eat grubs and other insect larvae as well as bees and wasps. When the opportunity arises, they will take mice, rats, moles, shrews, young ground squirrels and rabbits, nesting birds, nestlings, and bird or snake eggs. Skunks also eat corn, berries, and other vegetation. In an urban environment, they may eat garbage or pet food that has been left outside.

Habitat Modification:
Secure garbage cans and close dumpster lids at night.
Control rodent populations.
Do not leave pet food outdoors at night.
Remove brush or wood piles.
Control lawn grubs.
