Buster is a seven-year-old Bernese Mountain dog. “A true ‘gentle giant’ family dog. He loves nothing more than lying on the couch with his family on a rainy day and playing in the snow,” - said pet parent Michelle. While playing, a friend’s dog knocked him over, and he began having trouble walking on the hardwood floors. The vet diagnosed Buster with a herniated disc and recommended spinal surgery. However, the images taken of the herniated disc showed something else – a tiny mass on his lung. It was histiocytic sarcoma, a very aggressive cancer known to take Bernese Mountain dogs far too young. They started Buster on chemotherapy immediately.
Unfortunately, Buster started to show a serious reaction to chemotherapy, and in a few weeks, he was refusing all food. Michelle and Buster returned to the oncologist, where tests showed his liver was inflamed and near failure. He immediately went into intensive care. He was hydrated and fed intravenously, hoping it would get him over the hump and allow his liver to heal. Once Buster was finally able to come home, he still refused food. Michelle and her husband, Taylor, took him to the vet daily for help getting his many medications down. Now, nine months after the treatment, Buster is eating well, and his liver values are back to normal. They take him in for check-ups every three months, and so far, he is showing no signs of cancer. Given his condition when he was in the ICU, that’s remarkable! 🐾 https://blog.healthypawspetinsurance.com/bernese-beats-cancer-with-help-from-healthy-paws
Yakky is a well-loved Goldendoodle with a sweet disposition who touches the heart of everyone he meets. One day, Yakky suddenly became lethargic and wouldn’t eat. That night, he indicated he was in pain, but his pet parents couldn’t identify where. When they took him to their vet, they identified the pain as coming from his abdomen. An x-ray indicated a mass on one of his kidneys. After an abdominal ultrasound, the surgeon said they could be wrong about it being cancer, and the only way to know was to remove it, which also meant removing the kidney it was attached to. After they removed his kidney and tumor, Yakky made a full recovery and is expected to have a normal life span. He will need follow-up blood work, and values checked on his remaining kidney every three months, but he is happy and healthy.
