My soil samples called for lime. Fortunately my supplier was able to deliver it within a few days of my placing the order. Now I need rain to get the lime dissolved and into the soil. With some luck I should see some improvement in grass growth by the summer of 2024.

The pasture renovator got ‘the call’ last week. I needed to rip some heavy soil to take advantage of the rain. This device rips about 9” below the surface. I’ve gotten 2” of rain so far. The furrows in the soil are allowing that moisture to pe*****te deep into the roots of the grass. Hopefully we’ll continue to get rain for a few more days. I’d like to bank as much deep soil moisture as I can prior to 2024.

It’s time for soil samples. I dropped the samples off last week. Once the results come in I can start to plan for 2024.

Mother Nature decided to send some wind through my neatly raked windrows. At one point the little disturbance had clumps of hay about 30’ in the air.

It is very nice to have shredding customers who go out and mow around obstructions in their pasture before I arrive. This customer mowed around all but one tree on her property. This lessened the chance of me hitting something as well as preventing my having to slow down to creep around every tree, stump, and power pole.

It may be Glyphosate resistant Rye grass. It is not, however, shovel resistant Rye grass.

The smaller patches of Rye in my Coastal pastures will not survive the steel treatment this year. The larger patches will get additional attention next year.

The prep work for hay season is almost complete. Fertilizer will be applied once the Coastal is out of dormancy.
