Help out strays this winter. Cut a hole in bin and fill with straw, not blankets or hay. Fabric/ blankets will freeze but straw won’t and will help keep them warm.

It's going to be in the 90s all week, so Adoptable Bella is here to offer a refresher on leaving dogs in cars. TL;DR: Don't. Your pet is always safer at home rather than in a hot car while you run errands, even if it's just a few minutes.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the heat in a car can rise by:

🌡20 degrees in just 10 minutes
🌡30 degrees in 20 minutes
🌡40 degrees in an hour

And guess what? Cracking the windows doesn't help.

If you see a dog in a hot car, get help. Notify the business where the car is parked so they can assist in finding the dog's owner. Provide them with the car's make, model, and license plate number. If the owner can't be found, contact the police and wait nearby for them to arrive.

Remember never leave a child or pet unattended.

It's important to remember with the rise in temps never leave your two or four legged babies in the car, provide lots of water, and stay in the shade when possible.

This is Mr. Purple Paws. The hue on his paws and white patches of fur means he has been color-coded as bait in dogfighting.

When a cat is held as bait in a dogfighting ring, the white parts of its fur could be any vibrant color: orange, purple, green. The color serves as an identification for each individual cat, so that it’s easier for spectators to place bets on the order that the cats will die.

This is cruelty at its worst. It seems as Mr. Purple Paws was able to escape before he entered the ring.”

Never attempt to straddle a turtle on the road with your vehicle. Here is a few reasons why:

🚗 The "Common Snapping Turtle" native to Ontario, cannot retract into its shell like other turtles, as a means of 'protection'. Instead, the turtle will defend itself by rearing up, extending their long neck and lunge to snap as it is their only means of defence.

🚕 The "Common Snapping Turtle" is likely to get caught in the undercarriage of the vehicle, resulting in rolling them over causing death or extensive injuries such as a cracked carapace or plastron, broken jaw, limb and head trauma.

🚙 Smaller turtles like the "Midland Painted Turtle", will often stay in the middle of the road like a sitting target or 'scurry' across the road. Both often result in life threatening injuries or their demise.

Please stop if it's safe to do so, and help the turtle cross the road in the direction it is going.

Second only to habitat loss, road mortality is the biggest reason for the decline in their turtle populations.

🚘🐢if it is not safe for you and others to stop or avoid straddling a turtle then of course the best option is to straddle. But in cases where this can be avoided please consider the damage that straddling a turtle can cause to the turtle

ℹ️ About the Ontario Common Snapping turtle

In this post we are talking about the 🐢Common snapping turtles found in Ontario - they cannot break broom sticks or take off your finger. They have a bite capacity less than a human and only snap to try and scare you away since they cannot pull fully into their shell.

Of course it is always best to be aware of their ability to snap and thus help them in a way that is safe for you and keeps your hands clear of their mouth.

Who we are

Shaddow’s Helping Paws Rescue is a nonprofit animal rescue organization. The members of the organization are dedicated community members who help animals in need at a moment’s notice. We receive phone calls and Facebook messages about injured or lost animals. We follow social media posts about lost fur babies, as we call them, and we make every possible effort to find them and reunite them with their owners. If it is an injured animal, we pick them up, and care for them until a veterinarian can care for them, or we bring them to the animal shelter where the fur babies can get the necessary care they need that we cannot provide. We catch mice for the local Goodwill store and relocate them to a safer place where the animals will be able to thrive.
