“ITS OK HE’S FRIENDLY”

When an owner shouts “it’s ok he’s friendly” as their dog is advancing at break neck sp*ed towards your, under control on lead dog, what he’s actually saying is “my dog is totally out of my control and has absolutely no recall because I’m too lazy to train him”.

The “it’s ok he’s friendly” dog owner believes it’s his right to have his friendly dog off lead harassing others no matter where he is and we can safely assume therefore he has no manners himself either!

The “it’s ok he’s friendly” dog owner has no idea about dogs and is too lazy to learn. He doesn’t therefore understand that your dog may be recovering from an operation, may be nervous or anxious, or that you may actually be training your dog! He doesn’t really even care!

The “it’s ok he’s friendly” dog owner is generally looking for your dog or another person’s dog to entertain or wear his dog out so that he doesn’t have to do it himself!

The “it’s ok he’s friendly” dog owner often thinks that you, the owner who is being responsible and keeping their dog on a lead and under control, is actually the problem and that you shouldn’t be walking where his “friendly dog” with no training or recall has the right to run free!

The reality is that the “it’s ok he’s friendly” dog owner is a selfish and ignorant dog owner!

Don’t be an “it’s ok he’s friendly” dog owner.

Take responsibility & Train your dog and be aware of etiquette and other’s needs and rights too.

MUZZLE TRAINING! Something overlooked way too much. If your dog gets injured he will often need to be muzzled. Don’t wait to put on a muzzle while he’s already afraid. Condition him to the fact it is NOT a bad thing.

6-22-19. We had SO much fun in class. Today we learned stand, and the finish which completed our obedience exercises.

However, this class is SO much more than basic! We learned to wait before a door/gate is opened, the “touch it,” then proofed our “leave it,” proofed sits with a rolling ball, and meet and greet exercise! Please keep practicing everything we have learned and I look forward to graduation next Saturday!

Three students are not in the first picture. One was absent and the other two were behind me. They are in later shots though ☺️

Jagers second time on the new scent boxes. He gives a passive alert perfectly. Nosework is SO much fun! (Excuse the mess it was storming so we worked where we could)

Please help keep them cool in this heat!

Housebreaking Hints:
If a puppy is six weeks old it can NOT hold its bladder very long at all. It can and will need to go p*e sometimes every 15 minutes! IT TAKES COMMITMENT, VIGILANCE, TONS OF PATIENCE, DEDICATION AND TIME TO HOUSEBREAK A PUPPY. I’m going to list some things that may be helpful to help you survive the first few weeks:

1. Kennel train your puppy! I can NOT express how important this is. It keeps them safe while out of sight and provides a “den” or place they can go to when they don’t want to be bothered. Teach children to leave them alone when they are in their kennel. (I can provide helpful kennel training tips in a consult)

2. Provide fresh water as often as needed throughout the day. But, IF you have one that’s grabbing a sip or two every time they pass the water dish, then removing it and offering water once an hour will be helpful. At night remove water after 8 pm and take puppy out around 10:00 pm. Kennel your puppy at night beside your bed. Set your clock if you don’t think you will hear when your baby gets restless and needs to go out. Take puppy out every two hours at night then right back into kennel so he doesn’t learn to want to play during night. (He hasn’t been on a time clock with mom and littermates there was always someone awake to play 😉).

3. Puppies ALWAYS need to go out immediately after each meal and when they first wake up. Also, the minute you open the kennel door PICK THEM UP and take out or they will squat and go before the first few steps.
Do not come in until they use the bathroom.

4. When they wake from a nap - immediately outside.
When they get excited and playing - immediately outside.
After a meal or big drink - immediately outside.

5. Take them to the same place outdoors to potty each time.

6. Even if they JUST WENT they WILL need to go again within 15-30 minutes so beat them to it by offering and taking them out.

7. NEVER SCOLD YOUR PUPPY for an accident. If caught in the act grab them up quickly and go out.

8. Tethering your puppy to your beltloop is priceless for this training. It takes commitment and can be a little bit of a pain, BUT it keeps you from finding puddles you didn’t see and helps you keep up with the puppy. You can see when he starts exhibiting resltless sniffing smelling or looks like he’s fixing to go and you can whisk him away outdoors.

As they grow they are able to hold their “business” longer and longer. It won’t last forever, trust me.

I hope this is a help to you. For more information stay tuned for upcoming dates of Puppy 101 helpful hint consultation dates and locations.

Memo for class of July 28. Please try to solidify your sit stay, and work on the recall teaching the dog to sit facing you please. Don’t forget the down and down stay. In between remember to play with the “focus” and “leave it” exercises. These classes build on each other week to week, and each week we have a little more to practice. Short, upbeat happy sessions are best!
We will learn stand, stand stay, and door manners this upcoming class. I can’t enforce enough how important the stay needs to be in order to move forward. Great job so far so let’s not slack up now ....you’ve got this! See you all Saturday!

When you are remembering that special dog you trained in protection years ago that owned your heart....Widowmaker’s Equalizer, aka “JAKE.” This boy lived to be twelve and I still miss him every.single.day.

He was a one in a million dogs. Protection trained, drug trained, building search, nothing rattled him he would go for the hand with the weapon be it gun or bat. He was even in the movies by the same producer that made “Where The Red Fern Grows.” The movie was titled “Devil Dog.” Lol..he was far from that to me, but I could see where others might would have agreed with that title. (This picture was taken on our training field)
